As the name suggests, Chatroulette is a service which is dedicated to chat and chance. Chatroulette pairs random strangers for webcam-based conversations. Visitors to the website randomly begin an online stranger chat (video and text) with another visitor. At any point, either user may leave the current chat by initiating another random connection, by clicking a next button.
Launched in November 2009, by Andrey Ternovskiy, a 17-year-old high school student in Moscow, the service gained popularity last month, after being featured on Good Morning America, in The New York Times, in New York magazine,and on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
The site which receives about 500,000 visitors per day, with a presence of about 35,000 people on Chatroulette at any given time, has made some among us contemplate, “Is Chatroulette the true way to learn about the world ?”.

Update 12 March 2010: I sat to chat on Chatroulette around 12:15 am and continued my chat sessions(as there were close to 150 random chats) till 2:00 am. And these are my observations regarding the service:
1) Only one in every 30-35 chatters was a woman.
2) Chatters with Web cam enabled were 95 out of 100 times males.
3) The average time chatters spent on judging the usefulness of teh chat was utmost 20 seconds.
Assessment: Basically boys are looking for girls. Irrespective of gender, chatters appear to be in a big hurry. So the chances of one getting a meaningful conversation are the same as there are the winning chances in Roulette.
