Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), a Govt of India enterprise, is putting a dedicated team of 50 software professionals in its Bangalore and Delhi software development centers to develop an indigenous operating system (OS).
A software center is set up in Delhi for the task. The effort will be headed by DRDO, in collaboration with software companies and academic institutions.
Indian Govt thinks that such an initiative is necessary keeping in mind the country’s security needs. In simple, the country wants to keep sensitive data within its own geographic boundaries; and an indigenously built operating system connected to cloud (or data centers) with in the country will prevent sensitive information from passing over to territories outside India.
DRDO is also planning a commercial version of the OS. The OS is expected to be operational next year.
