EU to launch satellite dedicated to broadband access this Friday

EU is all set to launch a new satellite, from French Guyana, this Friday that will bring broadband Internet access to nearly 20 million European residents. Called Hylas 1, the satellite will be Europe's first dedicated solely to provide broadband and conventional telecommunications services. The satellite is built by ESA and Avanti, and its name stands for “Highly Adaptable Satellite”.

This adaptability will allow the satellite to bring HDTV broadcasts into homes as well, along with data distribution services planned for a later date. The services from the satellite will range between these two extremes.

With the launch, European consumers can expect reduction in broadband and conventional telecommunications services and equipments.

First year of the satellite’s working life will be spent performing demonstrations to show off its flexibility. --------
