India’s mobile handsets market recorded a growth of 3.6% to touch 40.08 million or 4.008 crore units in the third quarter ended September 30, 2010, as compared to the second quarter ended June 30, 2010, according to IDC India.
The year 2010 is expected to end with total mobile handset sales of 155.9 million units.
Smartphones category show phenomenal adoption rate:
The sales in smartphones category saw a growth of 34.2% quarter on quarter(Jul-Sep quarter compared to Apr-Jun 2010 quarter) and increase by 294.9% year-on-year(Jul-Sep 2010 quarter compared to same quarter i.e. Jul-Sep 2009).
Smartphones sales in 2010 are expected to touch nearly 6 million.

Nokia, the Finnish company_________31.5%
Followed by G’Five, a Chinese brand and Samsung, the Korean handset manufacturer at second and third place respectively.
According to IDC India, India mobile handsets market got even more crowded and fragmented in the lower- and mid-market segments with the further entry of new players offering innovative models at attractive price points to attract buyers.
While the number of emerging vendors in India were just 5, representing a 0.9% combined share of units shipped in the January-March 2008 quarter; they have grown to 68, capturing 41.2% of total shipments (sales) during July-Sep 2010 quarter.
More vendors means drop in smartphone prices:
More vendors means more competition among them, that has led to price drop through the year in smartphones segment. Devices are made available by vendors at successively lower price points. While 80% of total India smartphone sales were below the ASV (average sales value) of Rs 18,000 in the second quarter of 2010, this proportion increased to 90% in the third quarter of 2010.
Android is the choice of OS:
In the smartphone segment, an increasing number of vendors are displaying confidence in the Android OS, having grown from just one vendor in Jul-Sep 2009 to as many as 7 in same quarter 2010. On the criteria of “presence on number of devices” while adroid was running on 2.9 percent of smartphones shipped in Q3 2009; in Q3 2010 the share has gone up to 9.4%.
The number of models with Android OS also increased to 19 in the third quarter of 2010 as compared to only 2 models in the third quarter of 2009.
