Does song pricing affect listener’s choice? The iTunes Top 100 chart numbers for April 8, do seem to suggest so. Although it's too early to come to any concrete conclusions.
The iTune Store’s new variable pricing plan is slowly skewing the listener choice in favour of the $ 0.99 songs.
As of April 8 2009, the share of $ .99 and $ 1.29 songs in the iTunes Top 100 chart are as follows:
Number of $ 0.99 songs in iTunes Top 100 chart_________________60
Number of $ 1.29 songs in iTunes Top 100 chart________________ 40
While the premium songs slid an average of 5.3 places; the $ 0.99 songs rose 2.5 chart positions.
By April 9, 2009 while $.99 songs lost some of their share in the Top 100 chart; the premium gained some.
