Twitter's membership has grown by leaps and bounds. According to comScore Media Metrix, Twitter saw 9.3 million visitors in March, 2009. That's an increase of more than 5 million visitors. That's a whopping 131% growth from February, 2009.
The mainstream media's attention on Twitter has helped accelerate its growth. These days almost every newscast mentions Twitter in their news reporting.
Twitter is also turning average citizens into journalists, for example when news and pictures of Flight 1549 landing in the Hudson River was featured on Twitter.
Twitter is rapidly revolutionizing the way our news ecosystem operates, from reporters to consumers, and diminishing the lines in between.
Twitter is viral in nature. The more people use it, the faster it grows, and the faster it grows, the more people use it. There are a lot of celebrities using Twitter which has help raise the profile of Twitter and make it a mass-market tool in a very short amount of time.
