Iran's Internet journey so far

Young Iranians are using Social networks like Facebook and Twitter to gather support against the repressive regime of the re-elected president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.


With surge in activity since Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's re-election on Saturday, below is brief overview of the Iran's internet journey so far:

-- Iranians began their internet excursion during the repressive 1997-2005 presidensy of Mohammad Khatami ( Source of info: Internet censorship monitor OpenNet Initiative).

-- According to the OpenNet Initiative estimates, by 2007, there were about 400,000 or 0.4 million blogs in Farsi or Persian (Blogs by Iranians).This despite of extensive censorship by the Iranian Government.

-- At present, social network Facebook has about 150,000 members in Iran.

--In a country with a population of 70 million, more than 33 precent(23 million) have access to the internet.

--Of those, who have access to internet, more than 60 percent are under the age of 20. --------
