TCS Indian Generation Web 2.0 survey 2008-09

According to a survey conducted by India’s largest IT solutions provider TCS(Tata Consultancy Services), Among the metropolitan cities, Kolkata(formerly Calcutta) has highest mobile and PC penetration among students. In addition Kolkata has the highest internet penetration among students(12-18 years).

Consider these numbers:

-- 90 out of every hundred students in Kolkata have mobile phones.
-- 76 out of every hundred students in Kolkata have a PC at Home.

Both are above the national average.The study reveals that nationally 62 percent urban students have a PC at Home (25 percent own a laptop)

-- 31 percent of the students use Wikipedia for information sourcing.


Some other insights from the study:

-- Over 80 per cent of urban school children have access to mobile phones,

This group regularly surfs the internet; and is receptive to Web 2.0 tools like blogs and social networking sites.

-- 40 percent of the urban school children have a desire to study US. In short, US is the most favoured study destination.

-- School children in mini metros prefer an overseas education destination close to their homes, hence Singapore and Dubai feature in their lists. For metros the figure is 20 percent.

-- 63 percent of of urban students spend over an hour online daily.

-- 93 out of hundred are aware of social networking,

-- Orkut and Facebook are the most popular online destinations.

-- Around 46 per cent use internet to access news.
