It seems Apple Inc’s decision to delay the sale of its iPad overseas, till late may, is a source of frustration for shoppers in Europe, Asia and the Middle East who can't wait for the touchscreen device to arrive in local stores. As a result they are choosing to pay, much above the listed price of iPad up over the Web.
So-called resellers, opportunists who scoop up hot products and sell them over the Web at inflated prices, have been charging around $100 to $150 over list price for Apple iPad on sites like Craigslist or eBay. Although some retailers on eBay are asking for $1,200 or more for a high-end model that Apple sells for $699.
British online retailer PurelyGadgets.co.uk is selling iPad in the range of 590-790 pounds. In dollar terms this is $914-1223. And they are sold out.
It should be noted that there are a few factors which are contributing to opprtunists asking and getting premiums in the range of 500 to 700 dollar premium over the iPad’s listsed price:
First is obviously the popularity, Second is the fact that Apple is yet to announce overseas pricing (hence any over pricing is easy to justify) and; third is the recent Apple decision to delay iPad sale in overseas market.
For its overseas customers, Apple plans to announce international pricing and begin taking online orders (pre-orders) on May 10.
In Canada, iPad will be available through Rogers Communications by the end of May.
