According to a study by security firm BitDefender,
As much as 20% of all Facebook users are exposed to malware in their news feeds.
The study found that the “infections” that risk having viruses installed on users’ computers were present in news feeds. Majority of these malicious codes are carried by the apps written by independent developers, who throw enticements and rewards(like a free iPhone!) to trick users into installing the malware.
What makes the threat even more insidious is the fact that users on social networks like Facebook are “more likely to click on a link” from someone they trust.
To arrive at the findings, BitDefender analysed 14,000 Facebook users who use its security app.
