Mobile Number Portability (MNP), the service which allows a mobile subscriber to change his/her operator while retaining his/her old number, initially launched in Haryana on November 25 last year and later on extended to the rest of India on January 20; has been embraced well by Indians.
According to the data collected from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), up to February 2, 13.5 Lakh (or 1.35 million) subscribers have requested to avail the facility across India.
The northern region of the country comprising Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana has seen a significant jump in the number of subscribers requesting mobile number portability (MNP). There have been requests from nearly 300,000 or 3 Lakh subscribers from the country’s northern region.
State wise use of MNP, based on the number of requests received, with Punjab leading the table:

As the awareness about MNP is picks up, picking up, experts believe that the requests will increase significantly in the coming months.
