Consumers want phones with Big screens: Report

At present, Smartphones are available in a range of screen sizes. Mostly, like the iPhone and other smartphones come with screens of 3.5 inches to 3.9 inches. A few, launched last year come with screens 4 inches or larger--which include the Samsung Galaxy S, the HTC Evo 4G, and the Motorola Droid. And rest; come with screens under 3.5 inches.

But which screen sizes are the buyers opting for?

According to recent NPD's Mobile Track report – It’s the smartphones with Bigger screens.

According to NDP, while the share of sales of the smartphones with screens of 3.5 inches to 3.9 inches has stayed about the same over the past year, those sporting screens 4 inches and larger have gobbled up share at the expense of those with screens under 3.5 inches.

In short, Large-screen smartphones are proving a hot commodity among more consumers.

Here is the Share of Smartphone sales by Screen-size in Q4 2010:

4 inches or larger____________24 percent

(Note: The phones NPD cited in this category weren't released until the second quarter of last year.)

3.5 to 3.9___________________39 percent

Up 2 percent in the fourth quarter over the same period in 2009

Smaller than 3.5 inches________36 percent

Had a big drop in the fourth quarter, compared with 63 percent in the final quarter of 2009

Top Five big-screen phones:

1) HTC Evo 4G
2) Motorola Droid X
3) Samsung Fascinate
4) Samsung Captivate
5) Samsung Vibrant

According to NDP, the explosion in Web and video content available for smartphones has caused consumers to rethink their phones' sizes. Larger displays often offer a richer media experience, as well as a roomier surface for on-screen keyboards. With an aim to complement the video capabilities of 4G handsets, vendors are likely to continue favoring big screen phones. --------
