Indian Government to block .xxx domains

Last week, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) approved the .xxx suffix for pornography websites. According to reports India (along with many other countries from the Middle East and Indonesia) who is opposed to the grant of the domain in the first place, is going to block the whole domain. The action will be in conformance to Indian laws in this context. Under the Indian Penal Code, while distribution of adult content is illegal, watching such content is still permitted.

The act of blocking the .xxx domains in the country will be a symbolic act than anything, as the same content can be hosted in other domains like .com and .in etc. Hence other websites of the same nature will continue to provide access under different domains. To take care of this problem, the Indian Govt reiterates its practice of reviewing those sites on a case to case basis.

ICANN who took more than two years to allow separate .xxx extensions for porn sites ; ultimately bowed down to the demands of the porn industry, several internet activists and cyber law experts who believe that the new suffix in fact would mean recognition for the industry and would enable better policing by parents and employers.

The new top-level domain has already registered about 250,000 domains in anticipation, even before the approval came this month. The domain names are likely to be available in Q2 of 2011. --------
