Cricket sites and Television in India expected to mint money during CWC2011

When cricket sites in India are seeing a big surge in traffic, courtesy ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, it’s quite expected that the grand old Television will also be getting more eye balls than ever. But call it eternal rivalry, the India-Pakistan semi-final in Mohali, has got itself even a bigger distinction than a usual high eye ball attracting cricket match.

The match which is hailed by the media and the cricket crazy Indians as the biggest sporting event of the century (funnily only ten years have lapsed of it), might not have lived up to the expectation of being a nail biting finish, but it did break all the previous records as far as viewership is concerned.

According to rating agency aMap, a record number of Indians were glued to their television sets when India defeated Pakistan on March 30. A total of 67.53 million or 6.75 crore viewers watched the match. The match recorded the highest television rating in history; almost double the viewers than the India-Australia match. The India-Pakistan match ratings stood at 11.74 as compared to 6.53 for the India-Australia encounter.

To compare how big the feat is, consider these numbers – The ratings of Kaun Banega Crorepati when it was launched was between 4 and 5. Some of the general entertainment channels enjoy ratings of around 3.8 .

Other interesting facts about the said match with regard to engagement and its consequences are -- The average time spent per viewer for the India-Pakistan match was 3 Hours per person while viewers watched the India-Australia match for a little less than 2 hours (per person) on average; For a ten seconds of advertisement during the match companies reportedly paid Rs. 18 lakh.

It will be interesting to see the numbers for the India Sri Lanka Final on March 2 at Wankhede, Mumbai; as the island nation has proved to be a tougher competitor than Pakistan for India of late; plus the ad rates for the final match are said to be going at Rs. 24 lakh per ten seconds. Add to this another bit that, a ticket for the final is being sold in black market or illegally even up to Rupees 1.5- 2 lakh a piece; and even at this price, it ‘s hard to find one. --------
