If everything is shedding bulk, then why not memory for smartphones and tablets!
Elpida Memory and Akita Elpida Memory recently announced that they developed a technology that would allow them to commercially manufacture a four layer DRAM package only 0.8 millimeters thick,
This is amazing, considering that with the new memory, Elpida is further cutting the thickness by a 20% from the current 1.0mm four layer packages. This would mean the ability to pack more memory into mobile phones and tablets. This would further mean smartphones and tablets, which are not only thinner but also feature lower power consumption and low-voltage operation.
Elpida is Japan’s only maker of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips. Along with Korea’s Samsung, the two are the two major suppliers of high-end mobile DRAM chips for many smartphones and tablets seen at present.
Elpida expects to start shipping the new chip packages by Q3 this year.
