Apple Tripod patent can Help mount Your iPad better

Apple knows the importance of patents, like none other, by Apple. That's why, in the fast growing knowledge economy, you can see a range of patent filings from Apple; many of which never see the light of the day. Anyways, it also reflects, how much Apple wants to innovate to give the user a better experience.

In a patent filed, at the US Patent & Trademark Office today, is seen a a stand and a magnetic attachment system for the iPad, which already has magnets built in. This is a Apple Tripod, which the the giant may bring in coming months.

Apple Tripod:

Apple Tripod, is just like a three legged stand used by photographers to mount their cameras on. Though  Apple Tripod(with magnetic iPad holder)is for other purposes. The Apple Tripod is for the user to securely mount the iPad to a treadmill, Car windshield, or for taking photographs (which is not a good use, going by the Camera MP of Apple ipad; though it can be used for video-graphing a small meeting), music stand for reading sheet music on some app. Apple has highlighted nearly all the uses it sees the Apple Tripod may have.

Among the interesting uses, as filed by Apple, is  the description of a system that could magnetically connect two iPads. Apple sees its use, when coupled with the wireless transmitter in the stand, as a laptop -- where one tablet will be dedicated to Typing (will have keyboard displayed on it) and the other one as display. But to make the "write documents on iPad" plans of Apple realistic; typing on Apple iPad essentially needs to be improved. At present, it's hard to type. But if displaying content and typing pad are segregated on two iPads, things can be easier.






One area where I find Apple iPad lacking:

Apple iPad is often pegged as a device for "content consumption". But content consumption is not easy all the time. One such posture: When you are lying on your bed with your iPad hand held over your chest. since iPad is pretty heavy, it's hard to hold the iPad in that position for long. I believe, many people are using their iPad's in that position.  Apple should also create something for that (See picture on Right). Although I believe, it won't, it will never be made, because of bad ergonomics, which will be bad for Spine.

USB ultrasound device about Size of a PC Mouse

A USB ultrasound device about Size of a PC Mouse, which is being pegged as a 'Cheap USB ultrasound ready for developing world', has the potential to save the lives of hundreds of thousands of women and children in developing world, say its developers.

The USB ultrasound device about the size of a computer mouse, can be manufactured for as little as $50 (UK30), says Co-developer Jeff Neasham, from Newcastle University (UK). Jeff is an expert in underwater sonar technology and has previously developed systems for imaging the seabed (looking for shipwrecks or specific geographical features) as well as underwater communications and tracking systems. His expertise in sonar signal processing helped in keeping the manufacturing cost of the USB ultrasound that low. Notably, a conventional low cost scanner, one's used in many clinics, costs 20,000 GBP in UK.


How the device works:


The hand-held USB ultrasound device works in a similar way to existing ultrasound scanners, using pulses of high frequency sound to build up a picture of the unborn child on the computer screen. Its output power is 10-100 times lower than conventional hospital ultrasounds but the image quality produced is still of great utility to medical workers.


Usefulness of the Device:


In poorer parts of the world, mostly comprising the developing countries, childbirth is a dangerous event for both infant and mother. UN statistics estimate more than 250,000 women die annually from complications during pregnancy or childbirth, almost all of them - 99 percent - in developing countries.


A Worry:

In countries like India and China, which are known to be biased towards their daughters; the cheap ultrasound device has ample scope of misuse; resulting in the murder of more daughters. Many fathers in these countries are not human enough to protect their unborn girls.

Solar Panels which mimic a Sunflower
You may also have wondered that, a solar panel placed on the roofs, may become more efficient and effective; if it keeps readjusting its face to the Sun; so that its front always points towards the Sun. Just as a Sunflower does.

Qbotix, a Menlo Park, Calif. company has introduced a new robotic tracking system that mechanically pivots solar panels towards the Sun, saving energy and money. Making them upto 40 percent more effective.

Although the Qbotix may have specialised coding to accomplish the product; the "Robots pivot Solar Panels" is a lesson innovation. Scientists use Freely available Headset to get out of your Brain your Bank Account PIN

Scientists have successfully used Freely available cheap Gaming Headset to get information out of Human Brain!

This is not from some futuristic Sci-Fi Steven Spielberg movie; but a group of researchers from the University of California, University of Oxford and University of Geneva, today demonstrated how they can 'hack' someone's brain to find out their pin number - using a cheap headset.

Things the Researchers used in their "Brain Hack" Demonstration:

Researchers used a cheap headset called an Emotive, a freely available headset often used in gaming -- the headset allows users to interact with their computers by thought, available online for £190 (£299) for their research, and human volunteers to demonstrate their research.

The Result:

The Researchers managed to accurately guess pin numbers (Bank, and other logins) and even where someone lives.

How the Researchers retrieve the information they were looking for:

The Researchers made humans, with the headset on, sit in front of a computer screen and showed them images of banks, people, and PIN numbers. According to Ivan Martinovic, a member of the faculty in the department of computer science at Oxford, these emotive headsets (responding to human emotions taking place in the brain)have access to the wearer's raw EEG [electroencephalography, or electrical brain signal] data, and that contains certain neurological phenomena triggered by subconscious activities.

The researchers then looked for the regions in brain, which showed a spike in a certain type of brain activity, whenever the person saw some bank, or home.

There researchers then used that trigger to watch for numbers a person recognised.

The Researchers particularly tracked the readings coming off of the brain, specifically a signal known as P300. The P300 signal is used by the brain when a person recognizes something meaningful, such as someone or something they interact with on a regular basis. The electrical signal is released by the brain around 300 milliseconds after recognition occurs, hence its name. For instance, when the computer screen flashed the picture of US President Barack Obama, the P300 signal was  released.

Should you fear?

Should you fear for your privacy and security of your Bank PIN?

Not now. But if the demonstration is a glimpse of the future, then it can be said that such technology will be there in future, in a well packaged and efficient shape. This is not an impossibility, as right now, a Windows PC user is already controlling his PC with his brain.

How successful were the researchers in taking out sensitive and other information from the Human Brain:

The team found they could find a person's home 60% of the time with a one in ten chance, and had a 40% chance of recognising the first number of a PIN number. But, in the Research Paper the scientists state that 'the P300 can be used as a discriminative feature in detecting whether or not the relevant information is stored in the subject’s memory.

The Researchers are hopeful that the P300 linked research can ably assist the law enforcement agencies efficiently interrogate the criminal and take out crucial information from them.

BTW, get rid off the habit of memorising Bank Account Pins and other passwords. There are many bright guys out there (these researchers included :( ) ---------

Ants use TCP-like communication, discover Stanford Researchers

Two Stanford researchers, an ant biologist, and a computer scientist have found that harvester ants on the hunt for food, use method, similar to that of the protocols used to control traffic on the Internet.

How the discovery was made:

Deborah Gordon, a biology professor at Stanford, have been studying ants for more than 20 years. Gordon observed that the harvester ant colonies were sending out more ants to get food. She contacted another Stanford researcher Balaji Prabhakar, a professor of computer science and an expert on how files are transferred on a computer network.

When Prabhakar saw the particular ant behaviour, he found it almost the same as how [Internet] protocols discover how much bandwidth is available for transferring a file. In simple, The algorithm (mathematical model) the ants were using to discover how much food there is available is essentially the same as that used in the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). ---------

Tata creates a Car which Runs on AIR!
Indian car maker Tata hopes to bring a car powered by compressed air. The idea, beingtoyed for years but has proved difficult to build commercially — to market.

Welcome Tata's AirPod. Built on technology licensed from Luxembourg's MDI, the AirPod is a light, apparently one-seated car that's supposed to be able to run at between 45 and 70 kilometers an hour (28 to 43 miles per hour).

Instead of running on gas or electricity, however, the engine is powered by a tank of compressed air, which can either be pumped in through a charging station or taken in while driving with the help of an electric engine. The car can also recapture some energy during braking, similar to current hybrid vehicles.

720,896 GB of Data Stored onto a single gram of DNA
Researchers at Harvard, led by George Church, Sriram Kosuri and Yuan Gao, have managed to store a whopping 704-terabytes of data (1 Terra Byte Equals 1024 GB, the hard disk in my PC is 500 GB) onto a single gram of DNA. the feat was made possible by stuffing "96 bits into a DNA strand by treating each base (A, C, G, T, also called Codons. Codons are basic units in a DNA) as though it's a binary value. Watch the video below:





At present, the processing time is too slow for time-sensitive content, and cells with living DNA would destroy the strands too quickly to make them viable for anything more than just transfers.

Where the Scientists are seeing its use:

Scientists are hopeful of a day where A DNA strand will store the entire history of ... well, Humanity.

If you have ever played at an online poker site, you are familiar that there are multiple

Numerous online poker sites now offer the option to play on their site without having to
download their full client. While some sites tried to develop this type of client to bring in
Mac users, it wasn't until the iPhone and iPad started taking off that others began to really
experiment with a no download client.

Essentially, these clients work inside a mobile browser and require either flash or java
to run. In many cases you have many of the same options you would for the PC or Mac

With the availability of fresh water dwindling in many parts of the world, a problem that is expected to grow with populations; researrchers at MIT are looking at Seawater. The only promising source of potable water -- the world's virtually limitless supply of seawater. But so far desalination technology has been too expensive for widespread use.

Now, MIT researchers have come up with a new approach using a different kind of filtration material: sheets of graphene, a one-atom-thick form of the element carbon, which they say can be far more efficient and possibly less expensive than existing desalination systems.

According to BBC Reports, at TEDx Edinburgh yesterday, mathematician Max Little launched a new project that uses a speaker’s voice to help diagnose Parkinson’s disease. What makes the mathematician's algorithm a breakthrough is, there are currently no blood tests which can help doctors test for the disease. And what makes Little's Parkinson's voice test remarkable is that his algorithms can currently detect the symptoms of the disease with 86% accuracy.

What is Parkinson’s?

Parkinson's disease (also known as Parkinson disease, Parkinson's, idiopathic parkinsonism, primary parkinsonism, PD, or paralysis agitans) is a degenerative disorder of the brain that leads to shaking (tremors) and difficulty with walking, movement, and coordination.

Parkinson's disease most often develops after age 50. It is one of the most common nervous system disorders of the elderly. Sometimes Parkinson's disease occurs in younger adults. It affects both men and women.

In some cases, Parkinson's disease runs in families. When a young person is affected, it is usually because of a form of the disease that runs in families.

Parkinson's develops gradually and often starts with very slight tremor in one hand, is notoriously hard to diagnose.

Israeli firm Nation-E unveils "smart" power storage system
Amidst the projections of the Industry of energy storage growing to $35 billion by 2020; an Israeli firm Nation-E yesterday unveiled a new battery system that stores, manages and distributes energy, potentially cutting consumers' electricity costs and allowing solar and wind power to be used more effectively.

Battery is a Self Contained Smart Grid:

The battery functions like a self-contained "smart grid" that knows how to store energy when electricity is cheap and demand is low and then give it back during peak hours when tariffs are high.

A 6.7 kilowatt-hour unit, which is about half the size of a refrigerator, can supplement energy to a house for a few hours each charge, while a container-sized 1 megawatt-hour unit can handle an entire neighborhood.

Utilities see efficient energy storage as a vital element of future power grids by helping enable a steady flow of power despite the growth in renewable energy from wind and solar generation, which varies with the weather.

Nation-E is a brainchild of German-born Daniel Jammer, who has not only worked in a variety of fields from real estate to aerospace; but also owned two soccer clubs before founding Nation-E.

Price: A 6.7 KWh system costs around $25,000 and its 1 MWh unit $3.5 million. ---------

MIT Develops a computer program to spot your Frustrated OR Fake Smile
In our every day lives, we sport both genuine and Fake smiles on our faces. Sometimes the world successfully spots a fake smile, sometimes it doesn't. As a result , we are much at ease. But imagine a future, where even your dumb computer snubs you for your fake smile.

That day, you'll definitely scratch your head.

No you will not.

As MIT researchers feel that such a responsive computer will be able to serve you much better.

Nailing down your happy and frustrated Smiles:

A new computer program developed at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) can guess right nearly twice as often as humans.

The computer program can analyze human smiles. Right now it can tell a genuine smile from a frustrated one--and do so with much better accuracy than we humans can. The researchers are optimistic that some day it may be able to to much more. For them, it’s the first step, they say, towards developing machines that can recognize emotions.

How the Software is created:

Researchers at the MIT’s Media Lab created the software as part of their mission to make “more intelligent and respectful” computers.

The team began by filming a sampling of spontaneous smiles, some delighted and some frustrated, from 27 people who watched the video of an adorable baby. the participants were also made to fill a lengthy, malfunctioning online form. Interestingly, 90 percent of people smiled when they got frustrated.

To develop the algorithm (flow chart), the researchers broke down the smiles into two different types: Frustrated fake smiles came on fast and disappeared quickly; happy smiles rose more gradually and faded over time. The fake smiles were also thinner and stiffer.

Next, 12 people were shown still-frame shots of the two types of smiles and asked which were frustrated and which were happy. These subjects were only able to chose correctly 50 percent of the time--no better than a random guess. The algorithm, on the other hand, was able to gauge the difference accurately 92 percent of the time.

Why the software has a great success rate:

According to Ehsan Hoque, assistant researcher of MIT’s Affective Computer Group and the study's lead author, the reason for computer software faring better than humans is that while the humans usually kind of zoom out and try to interpret an expression, a computer algorithm can utilize the nitty-gritty details of a signal, which is much more enriching.

Possible Applications:

According to the researchers, a responsive and reactive computer is not a bad scenario, as such a computer will be able to serve its human master better. The impact of emotion-sensing computers could be profound: they could sense our feelings and respond more appropriately. Ona more serious note, the software program developed could also prove a boon to those with interpersonal psychological issues, such as autism, in which an individual has difficulty picking up on emotion cues in face-to-face communication.

Students from the University of Kent at Canterbury, along with the youngsters from the VI Centre at The Charles Dickens School in Broadstairs, are creating a new iPad App -- which will enable visually impaired or partially sighted people enjoy art exhibitions and displays.

How the ipad App works:

The iPad programme gives vivid descriptions of each picture and adds sounds such as sea, wind or birdsong to conjure up an atmosphere of the work.
The App is already tested and both the researchers and those who used it are delighted with the results.

Samsung names its flexible screens -- Youm
In CES2011, Samsung demoed its flexible screen.

After more than a year now, the Electronics giant confidently envisions the technology being used in a variety of devices, such as an e-reader, a camera, and a video chat system; and gives its flexible AMOLED technology, a name – Youm.

The company also imagines the tablet showing off 3D images through the use of an augmented-reality system.

Youm, are Samsung’s thin, next-generation screens, which are so malleable they can be bent like a paper card. Samsung claims that the bendable cards are unbreakable (uncrackable).

Below is the bendable screen--a 4.5-inch screen, less than 0.3mm thick and sported an impressive WVGA (800x480 pixel) resolution – is what Samsung displayed at CES 20122:




Flexible Super AMOLED, and now known as YOUM (trademark name), consists of four layers of material: the AMOLED display cells are encased in two pieces of film, and a polariser (probably housing the multi-touch sensor) on top of it. There’s no glass in the design, which gives it a much greater flexibility than the barely curved screens seen on the later Nexus phones.



LG only last week revealed that it has started mass production of what it called the "world's first" plastic electronic paper display.

Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication could be the next Savior on modern roads
If your car could have the intelligence of a pillion rider or you; then you won’t have to steer it; instead it would itself turn, overtake and slow down, and speed up on its own.

This may have saved you from a lot of scratches, slight brushings and crashes.

But, there is hope. As there is emerging technology that could make this possible.

Vehicle-to-vehicle communication is considered the next step in vehicle safety according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and has the potential to affect 80 percent of vehicle crashes on the road. Using wireless technology embedded in a vehicle, it sends safety messages to other cars on the road to provide information on speed, direction, and location to help avoid crashes. It’s like, one car on highway saying to other, “Don’t turn left man, I’m speeding up”.

A number of high-end cars already use radar and cameras in their pre-collision systems, but those can only alert drivers of hazards within close proximity. That apart, ordinary people don’t drive expensive cars. This new technology of, Vehicle-to-vehicle communication, can reach 360 degrees around a vehicle and look beyond adjacent cars to “see” potential dangers obscured from the driver’s view.

The technology is much realistic, as it is relatively inexpensive to install, and with a deployment strategy and industry commitment, it can reach all vehicles on the road.

When ordinary cars can have this technology:

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), with the help of the University of Michigan, USA, is already testing the technology for in-car consumer acceptance and will look at every day real-world scenarios starting this summer. After collating adequate data, the institutions will analayse the data to determine whether the technology can be put in all new cars. ---------
