Aircel, Huawei complete 4G trials in India

There is much talk of LTE (Long Term Evolution) or 4G in US, and the country has managed to transition to LTE to an extent as well. But the story is different for India. The country is at present transitioning to 3G, and operators are focusing primarily on that.

But field trials for LTE are already on in India as well.

Telecom operator Aircel and telecom equipment maker Huawei have announced to complete field trial of LTE-TDD technology in combination with two existing wireless technologies namely GSM and UMTS using chipset from Qualcomm.

Notably, Aircel is will be the first telecom service provider to have successfully experienced LTE-TDD functionality using multimode devices based on Qualcomm chipset in its GSM,UMTS, LTE-TDD network provided by Huawei at Hyderabad. GSM, UMTS and LTE - TDD come under category of 2G, 3G and 4G technology, respectively.

Aircel is a pan India operator. It has 3G spectrum in 13 circles and BWA spectrum in eight circles.

Some definitions:

Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is a third generation mobile cellular technology for networks based on the GSM standard. Developed by the 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project), UMTS is a component of the International Telecommunications Union IMT-2000 standard set and compares with the cdma2000 standard set for networks based on the competing cdmaOne technology.

GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications, originally Groupe Spécial Mobile), is a standard set developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) to describe technologies for second generation (or "2G") digital cellular networks. Developed as a replacement for first generation analog cellular networks, the GSM standard originally described a digital, circuit switched network optimized for full duplex voice telephony.

LTE TDD: LTE-TDD is the preferred choice for mobile broadband in unpaired bands. The demand for mobile broadband is growing rapidly in mature and emerging markets alike. To meet this demand, mobile operators need to invest in significant additional frequency spectrum and new, more efficient mobile broadband technologies. One of the most important is LTE TDD, which will provide a range of significant benefits to operators, end users, and the global mobile broadband industry at large.

How were the trials?

According to Huawei , during trial run, peak data transfer speed of 245 megabyte per second during was achieved. The peak rate was achieved both in fixed and mobile condition of device moving at speed between 3 to 5 kilometer per hour. To understand this, it means that a person moving at speed of 3 to 5 km per hour can download a bollywood movie of 700 to 800 megabyte in 3 seconds.

Content with the trials, Huawei is now ready to deploy commercial LTE-TDD network for GSM and UMTS mobile operators for mobile broadband in India.

A bit about LTE in India:

In India, most telecom operators have indicated to adopt Long Term Evaluation (LTE) Technology for rolling out Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) services. Though FDD (frequency division duplexing) version of LTE is available in some countries, Indian telecom operators for some technical reason can only deploy Time Division Duplex (TDD) version of LTE, reports ET. However, non-availability of TDD LTE chipsets and equipments commercially had kept roll-out of BWA services by private telecom companies on hold in the country, even though BWA spectrum was allocated to companies in October, 2010.
