Facebook App Center announced amidst Ad revenue worries

Google is not alone who is worried about the mobile's surge. Facebook is as well.

That’s why Facebook has launched its own app store to promote mobile programs that operate using the social network.

Explaining is App Center to the world, Facebook says, its app store will become the "new, central place to find great apps”. Only eligibility criterion the Social giant puts in is: Only apps which make use of Facebook's log-in system Connect are eligible to be included in the store.

Thus the App Center is designed to grow mobile apps that use Facebook - whether they're on iOS, Android or the mobile web.

In a blog post Facebook made it clear that the store was not designed to compete head-on with the likes of Apple's App Store and Google Play. Instead the Facebook App Center is designed to grow mobile apps that use Facebook - whether they're on iOS, Android or the mobile web. From the mobile App Center, users can browse apps that are compatible with their device, and if a mobile app requires installation, they will be sent to download the app from the App Store or Google Play.

The store will follow the much tested app browsing format - and will be available on mobile.

What is in offer for the developers?

Developers will have the ability to charge a fee for apps sold in the store in the near future. Plus they have a new place to flaunt their creations.

This is what Facebook has to say regarding the ability of developers to make money out of App Center,

Many developers have been successful with in-app purchases, but to support more types of apps on Facebook.com, we will give developers the option to offer paid apps. This is a simple-to-implement payment feature that lets people pay a flat fee to use an app on Facebook.com. If you are interested in the beta program, please sign up to receive more information. We are excited to give developers a new way to grow their apps with the App Center. Get ready for the upcoming user launch by creating your app detail page today.

The worry:

The announcement came as Facebook admitted growth in mobile use could hurt future advertising revenue. Ahead of its IPO, Facebook told potential investors in a statement, that it Facebook users increasingly access Facebook mobile products as a substitute for access through personal computers, and if the company fails to successfully implement monetization strategies for mobile users, or if it incurs excessive expenses in this effort, its financial performance and ability to grow revenue would be negatively affected.

When will App Center be launched? Globally!

In "the coming weeks", said Facebook's Aaron Brady in a post on the network's developer blog. The blog post also invites all developers out there to start preparing today to make sure their app is included for the launch.
