XBMC, the open-source media center software that is responsible for the more celebrated offshoots like Plex and Boxee, is installed on to Apples new Apple TV box, to transforms the $99 Apple TV into a 1080p media centre.

XBMC provides full hardware video decoding using Apple’s ‘VideoToolBox’ private video acceleration API. This allows XBMC to access Apple’s A4 SOC hardware video acceleration and allows the Apple TV to now stream 1080p video rather than the standard 720p.

It’s not safe for recent or popular or deficient devices to visit some Developers' hub, they can lose their identity.

Developers at the XDA Developer Forums have managed to get Ubuntu(a desktop OS by Linux) run on the NookColor, which has gone from a boring eReader to a versatile Android tablet (yes it got Android personality some weeks ago too).

Although many sharp brains are given credit for the hack(involves the Nexus One-Ubuntu hack), but one devastatorx is the one who posted it up.

To run Ubuntu on your Nook Color, you can use the instructions here. But Do this at your own risk. Apart from the fact that doing this will void your nook Color warranty, in addition, it has been reported that the hack is not stable enough. ---------

Hackers have released a code that makes it easy for people to run homemade games, other operating systems or even pirated games on Sony’s PS3 or Play Station 3 console.

The said hackers have released a custom firmware for the system that allows people to install it on the PS3 by using the program in a USB device instead of the dongle adapter ( that would previously allow players to load packages to the console). In the absence of this hack, first announced during the Chaos Communication Congress in Berlind, held on Dec 29 by fail 0verflow team - the group of people who cracked open the Nintendo's Wii, PS3 would run programs and games manufactured by Sony only.

How the hacking materialized:

The firmware opens PS3's architecture for anyone to run any operating system or games on Sony's exclusive PS3. iPhone hacker George Hotz, or GeoHot, has released his hack on his website.

Times when Sony’s devices were successfully compromised and counter action taken by Sony:

The first version of the PlayStation had Linux but has been removed since, leading to the hack. Last year, a USB dongle called PSjailbreak was released that contained software allowing games to play pirated games on the PS3. However, Sony updated its consoles to block the game.

This time around though, Sony will have to release new hardware to block the hackers, who took advantage of Sony's 'official signature' that uses a constant number for each signature. ---------

As soon as Barnes & Noble released the Android-powered Nook Color, it was expected that some sharp people would surely want to see how a Nook Color looks and works when hacked to run the Kindle app.

And the moment has come. Nook color has been rooted (the act of accessing those previlges which the manufacturer reserves to itself) to run Kindle for Android App. Here are the step-by-step rooting instructions.

Benefits: one can download Kindle books on Nook color and have both eBook stores available to you on a single device. Rooting the device also enables it for the Android Market.

Caution is advised: The rooted Nook Color firmware is less than perfect, requiring a reboot now and again, but it's fairly stable (certain apps such as the Kobo Reader for Android don't always run properly). And as Nook Color is a $250 device, act on your own risk. ---------

Here 's an interesting incident to share. On a flight home James Whelton booted up an iPod nano with a "modified SpringBoard plist file" that "removed" an app from the screens and replaced it with a blank space.

As Endgadget says, although the replacing a single app with a blank space doesn't mean much right now. But if the act shows Apple's grip being loosened or Apple's other motives, then means a lot.
