RIM launches PlayBook

Research in Motion has finally launched its 7-inch tablet, called BlackBerry PlayBook, at the company's DEVCON 2010 conference in San Francisco.

The new device, previously called the BlackPad, will run a completely new operating system called QNX, RIMbought earlier in the year, rather than its BlackBerry OS(found on its smartphones, such as the BlackBerry Torch and Bold handsets).

Spec details are:

1) 9.7mm thick. Measures 5.1"x7.6"x0.4" (130mm x 193mm x 10mm)

2) 7" LCD, 1024 x 600, WSVGA, capacitive touch screen with full multi-touch
and gesture support

3) BlackBerry Tablet OS with support for symmetric multiprocessing

4) 1 GHz dual-core processor

5) 1 GB RAM

6) Two HD cameras (3 MP front facing, 5 MP rear facing), supports 1080p HD
video recording

7) Can run two screens at the same time, making the device ideal for business executives. One screen for presentation other for notes to read from.

8) Video playback: 1080p HD Video, H.264, MPEG, DivX, WMV

9) Audio playback: MP3, AAC, WMA

10) HDMI video output

11) Wi-Fi - 802.11 a/b/g/n

12) Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR

RIM intends to also offer 3G and 4G models in the future.

According to the company BlackBerry PlayBook is expected to be available in retail outlets and other channels in the United States in early 2011. Other international markets will start getting it Q2 2011. --------
