Intel Light Peak, a high-speed connection standard, like USB but very fast, capable of transferring data at 10 gigabits per second, may be arriving sooner than expected. According to some stories, Light Peak can appear in products in the first half of 2011.
Notably, the 10Gbps speed, is twice the speed of USB 3.0 (SuperSpeed), and is simultaneous in both directions. In addition it has the potential to be scaled up 100Gbps in the next 10 years.
The technology is not some big talk, Intel has demonstrated the technology twice before.
If past rumors are to be believed, Apple could be among the first to incorporate the technology. Some industry sources are of the belief that it was actually Apple that conceived the idea for Light Peak, and the company reportedly helped Intel guide the development of the standard.
