Courtesy the advent of 3G services and the Mobile Number portability (MNP),and overall lower prices of 2G services in India, the rural India has surpassed the urban India with respect to the demand for new mobile connections.
According to the latest data from TRAI, India’s telecom regulator; in the month of July 2011, while th mobile phone subscriptions in urban areas (cities) grew at a rate of 0.64 percent; the mobile subscription in rural areas grew at a rate of 1.05 percent over the previous month.
According to TRAI, till end July 2011, the total number of mobile subscribers in India was 85 crore 83 Lakh 70 thousand (or 858.3 million).
Out of these 57 crore 57 Lakh 10 thousand (575.7 million) subscribers are in cities; and 28 crore 95 Lakh 70 Thousand (289.5 million) were in villages.
