Cricket IPL leads Google Top Searches in India in News in 2011 List

In 2009, when a blogger friend started a cricket schedule site, I wondered who on earth will want to know the schedule of the upcoming Test, ODI, T20 and domestic matches. But only a couple of months later he was getting 40k traffic a day.

The country is indeed crazy about cricket.

That’s why it’s not surprising that IPL, or Indian Premier League, the annual Twenty-twenty tournament played in India, leads the Google Top Searches in India in News in 2011 List.

Followed at #2 by another cricketing search, World Cup 2011.

One issue which kept buzzing among Indian middle class in 2011 is the issue of Corruption. With Anna Hazare becoming the pivot of the Fight against Corruption, the concept of ombudsman proposed by his team, called the Jan Lokpal, and the one talked about by the Central Government, the “Lokpal”, pushed the search term “Lokpal Bill” at #5 of the top search results.

Although Indians talked about Japanese Earthquake too; Aadhar -- The Indian government’s plan to implement a unique identity code for each Indian citizen was also searched by Indian netizens with enthusiasm. Contrary to the world’s perception of India being a country of metaphysical thought; Indians searched for “Aadhar card”, helped the search term secure the #7 position.

Osama Bin Laden, Pakistan and F1 took the #8, #9 and #10 positions respectively.
