China and later India to surpass US as world’s Biggest Smartphone Market

There’s still a huge latent demand for cheaper smartphones, informs a recent survey by IDC on smartphone and Internet trends in emerging markets like China, India, and Brazil.

With Apple already seeing huge demand for its iPhones in China, the survey expects China to surpass US, the largest market for smartphones in the world, this year.

Other biggest mobile markets like Indian and Brazil are also expected to soon surpass developed countries like the U.S., U.K., and Japan in smartphone demand.

Who among the smartphone makers are the real winners?

The players which are benefiting from this huge but fast surging latent demand for smartphones in China, and other developing markets have been the phone manufacturers with phones costing less than $200, reports IDC.

IDC expects $50 smartphones catering to this market, not a distant possibility.

A county of over a billion people, India, has already seen the arrival of low-cost phones. Low cost phone makers (smartphone makers would be a more apt defintion) such as Micromax, Spice, Karbonn, and Lava, are already registering their presence in India; a country, where the fans of around $100 or INR 5000 smartphones are still not concerned about user experience.

In South American nation, Brazil, amidst high-cost smartphones, prices are breaking down through the $300 barrier this year.

On the Internet usage on smartphones, IDC reveals that in China about 38 percent of Internet users access the web exclusively using their handsets. IDC, thus suggests a scenario to the carriers in these countries, wherein they try to offer cheaper and more innovative usage plans to the users of these cheap smartphone users; else this group will have to go to higher priced phones.
