South Korea may be called the world's most advanced country in tech. That's why it's not surprising if some unbelievable claim emanates from the country. The country's Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MEST) the week ago announced that it would invest 1.6 trillion won ($1.5 billion) to develop 5G technology which will be 1,000 times faster than 4G LTE.

How Fast is South Korea's 5G? 


Well, that will enable the user download an 800 MB movie in Just One Second.

When MEST 5G will be available to inhabitants of South Korea?


MEST plans to roll out a trial 5G service by 2017. The commercial service will be available by 2020. ---------

NIKE ColorDry Technology to Eliminate Water and Chemicals in Dyeing


Sportswear maker, NIKE, Inc. just yesterday opened a waterfree dyeing facility featuring high-tech equipment to eliminate the use of water and process chemicals from fabric dyeing at its Taiwanese contract manufacturer Far Eastern New Century Corp.

NIKE, Inc. has named this sustainable innovation "ColorDry" to highlight the environmental benefits and unprecedented coloring achieved with the technology. The event marks NIKE, Inc.'s February 2012 announcement that it had taken a strategic stake in Dutch start-up, DyeCoo Textile Systems B.V., a company that invented a technology to replace water, normally used for dyeing, with recyclable CO2, reducing energy use and eliminating the need for added chemicals in the process.

On average, an estimated 100-150 liters of water is needed to process one kg of textiles today. Industry analysts estimate that more than 39 million tons of polyester will be dyed annually by 2015.

NIKE, Inc. sees the step as a step closer towards its Chief Operating Officer, Eric Sprunk's belief that businesses recognize the need to reduce dependence on constrained resources, manufacturing innovation can play a key role.

Initial indications from Far Eastern New Century Corp. (FENC) show the ColorDry process is both more efficient and more consistent than traditional, resource-intensive dyeing methods."Compared to traditional dyeing methods, the ColorDry process reduces dyeing time by 40%, energy use by around 60% and the required factory footprint by a quarter. It's also the most saturated, intense and consistent color we've seen," said Mr Kuenlin Ho, Exec. Vice President at FENC.

Consumers can expect to see NIKE Inc. ColorDry products in the marketplace from early 2014.

Sleep anywhere anytime with Ostrich Pillow | Dream With Me
Those who study too much in Libraries, or travel 20 days a ,month, know the true meaning of being sleep deprived. Although, they can douse literally anywhere, but the sleep is not that tight; and people voices and people walking, caught the glimpse of from eye corners, are always there.

For such sleep deprived, there comes the Ostrich pillow, designed by Madrid's Banana Studios.

The Pillow offers people a new way to take a nap. A new way to take a siesta in Spain and may be anywhere in coming months.

Madrid-based Banana Studio has created a curious little pillow with four holes. Dubbed the Ostrich pillow, it has space for the head, two hands, and an opening to breathe, allowing anyone to rest anywhere.

For people looking for a nap on the go, in the office or in the library, the hand-made pillow aims to fill a gap in the market. Ali Ganjavian designed the pillow along with Key Portilla-Kawamura, and Ganjavian says they saw an opening for the product.


Ali Ganjavian, Ostrich Pillow Designer, has this to say about his pillar,

"Immediately we realized that many people from different sectors want it: firemen, students, doctors who sleep in hospitals, people who travel a lot and spend a lot of time in airplanes, people who study a lot in libraries. So, suddenly we realized that many people need it, not just a very small niche but many people need it and this is interesting because it is when you start saying this is a product that people need at a global level."





The designer sees a bright future future for the pillow, which logically goes well with people spending much of their time travelling or at a desk.

A Bit about Sleep:

Closing one's eyes helps one sleep. As darkness experienced that way, gives the brain the signal to switch off the more conscious activities and send the body to sleep. That's why people use eye blinds to sleep on aeroplanes. Hence, this product would be effective.

This is the fun thing about innovation. Simplest of Science, can bring a highly effective product. For instance, if you are struck in a cold night, with nothing to drape yourself (like a blanket), just place your palms under your head and instantly you will feel warm. The reason behind this is: We lose a lot of heat through body extremities  like finger tips, ears etc. Once you put palms and fingers between your head and the sleeping surface you instantly start conserving heat. And one more thing, fold your feet over the lungs (shields the lungs from losing heat and also decreases the body surface area; less surface area will mean less less heat loss.)

Another way to conserve body heat, when you're stuck outside in a cold night, but this time have the luxury of having just one small quilt or cloth piece; is place that quilt or cloth on your chest. Since much blood is circulated via lungs, keeping lungs warm, helps one stay warm for relatively more time.

This product could have been more better, if it hides the ear with some semi permeable layer; and has a baby feeding napkin like extension to cover the Chest. That way it would conserve body heat as well. ---------

'Bi-Fi' - The Biological 'Internet' , a Major Breakthrough

How Cells communicate?

Well by various mechanisms -- which include chemicals. But communication via chemicals can be limited to basic messages. For example, if a cell's network is based on sugar, then it is limited to sending the messages 'more sugar', 'less sugar,' or 'no sugar'. This type of messaging, as can be seen, is limited.

In a breakthrough, researchers at Stanford University have found a way to send "complex" and "powerful" cellular messages using the M13 virus.

Monica Ortiz, a doctoral student in bio-engineering  and Drew Endy, PhD, an assistant professor of bio-engineering have discovered Biological Internet, or "Bi-Fi" (Similar to Wi-Fi).

Bi-fi simply means cells engineered with the M13 virus have the ability to send complex DNA messages from cell to cell.

Teh Researchers found that the Cells engineered with M13 step up their messaging capabilities, that's don't just depend on basis messaging, as explained above. Instead, cells engineered with the M13 virus can include any sort of genetic instruction: start growing, stop growing, come closer, swim away, produce insulin and so forth. This is possible because the M13-based system is essentially a communication channel. It acts like a wireless Internet connection that enables cells to send or receive messages, but it does not care what secrets the transmitted messages contain.

According to Researchers, obviously the ability to communicate 'arbitrary' messages is a fundamental leap -- from just a signal-and-response relationship to a true language of interaction.

Sony unveils eyeglasses to make movie subtitles non-intrusive
While watching a movie, subtitles may annoy some, but for others with hearing difficulties, subtitles mean the difference between being able to watch a movie, or not.

Sony UK has come up with special eyeglasses meant to make happy the latter group. The eyeglasses developed by Sony UK display the subtitles right on to them, just for the wearer, without annoying the rest of the audience.

The glasses work by projecting the words onto the glasses of the person wearing them in such a way as to not necessitate the wearer having to constantly adjust for near and far; something that would cause enormous eye fatigue, reports a science blog. Instead, the effect is almost the same as if the words were projected onto the screen (the wearer will feel that the subtitles are displayed on the television screen). Another big advantage of the special eyewear is that, the wearer will see the subtitles, even if someone in front obstructs the subtitle part of the screen.

The glasses can be a great hit with the people with hearing impairment, elderly with low hearing and people having problems at interpreting accent. The glasses could also be used for watching translated movies, with each person In audience getting the subtitles in his/her known language, even while watching the movie with multilingual audience.

Sony says the glasses should be available in the U.K. sometime next year, and if they are received well then the rest of the world sometime after that.

Taiwan researchers develop eco-friendly rewritable 'paper'
Scientists at Taiwan’s top industrial research unit, Industrial Technology Research Institute, have developed an environmentally friendly form of rewritable electronic paper that works without electricity. Yes without electricity. Unlike the e-book technology currently available in the market, the rewritable e-paper, named "i2R e-paper" does not require to be back lit. And hence doesn’t consume electricity. The technology used in the paper, simply depends on the heat to store or transmit images onto the flexible display. Click here to watch video.

To use the i2R e-paper again and again, a user simply has to insert it into a thermal writing device similar to what is used in fax machines, and all the writing on the paper will be erased.

At its current level of development, the paper can be reused for up to 260 times.

The researchers inform that the technology can be used in products such as digital books, electronic bulletin boards and large-sized digital bulletin boards.

The institute has tied up with a Taiwan company, and hopes the products using the technology to be available in the market in a year or two. ---------

An optometrist at India’s Shekhar Eye Research Center, Chandrashekhar Chawan, has developed diamond encrusted, gold plated contact lenses. Inspired by the jewels in his wife's teeth, Mr Chawan’s embellishment for your eyes will cost you $15,000 or about rupees 7 lakh.

The profits from te hsale of the contact lenses will go toward treating patients suffering from Stevens Johnson Syndrome, a skin disease that can lead to vision loss.
