HP unveils Slate 7: Its first Android tablet

HP, hours back, unveiled Slate 7: Its first Android tablet. The price of Slate 7 is $169, and will compete with entry level 7-inch tablets.

In 2011, HP's TouchPad tablet — based on Palm's webOS operating system—didn't able to make its mark in the market. Earlier HP experimented with Windows-based tablets, but with no success.

More recently, HP chose to be with Windows 8 with the ElitePad tablets(targeted at Business users) and the convertible Envy x2, a PC with a removable slate.

With Slate 7 (targeted at consumers), HP has entered into the Android market. Showcased at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the Slate 7 weighs 13-ounce (325 grams) and is arriving in U.S. in April.

Slate 7 Specs:

1) 7-inch display with a modest (1024 by 600px resolution) display (same as the original Kindle Fire)
2) Runs on Jelly Bean 4.1 Android
3) Powered by dual-core ARM processor
4) Two cameras, a rear 3-megapixel camera and a VGA front camera
5)  8 GB of memory, expandable via microSD
6) Battery lasts for 5 hours (unimpressive).
7) Embedded Beats Audio (HP claims is an industry first for tablets)
8) Direct printing capabilities
9) Connectivity: Wi-Fi only

Google launches 'Google Now' -- Siri like feature with Jelly Bean
Google launches 'Google Now', Siri like (voice guided Assistant in Apple's iPhone)feature with its new Android 4.1 OS or Jelly Bean.

But Google Now is more capable than Apple's Siri.

Google Now:

The new Google Now features voice control and search, just like Siri, but it also has a new card-based interface to help users in their Day to day activities.

Putting its Search expertise to work, Google's voice Assistant feature pulls users’ search history, calendar, and location to present the users with the information they need when they need it. So based on the user's search history, the Google Now can give users information like the next appointment in their calendar, when to leave for the destination, the information about the trains to arrive at the subway station when the user reaches there, give directions around traffic etc.

Since he Google Now feature is based on User's search history, it is capable of offering information of almost anything a user usually searches. This can be real-time updates for games, weather, nearby points of interest etc.

What makes Google Now Better than Siri?

Unlike Siri, Google now can also provide translations, currency conversions, and flight information. But what makes it better than Siri is: users don’t actually need to ask the feature to provide the information. The information will just appear based on the time and location, though users should still have the ability to ask Google Now for specific information.

On second thoughts, lets hope Google Now doesn't turn into an irritating friend, or Bossy wife or Girlfriend!.

Google launches new Android-based tablet, the Nexus 7
Google today unveiled a new Android-based tablet, the Nexus 7.

The device, is being produced with PC maker Asus.

The Nexus 7 sports a 7-inch  IPS screen, an Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core CPU (4+1 core configuration), 1 GB of RAM, the new Android 4.1 OS – Jelly Bean!, a 1.2 MP Front camera for video chat (no rear camera) and  a  4325mAh battery.

The price of Nexus 7 is $199. It ships in mid-July.

Is Nexus 7 a threat to the Apple iPad?

It doesn't appear so. The Nexus 7 may be $200 less than the entry level $499 price for the latest iPad. But still iPad has a 45 percent larger screen, at 9.7-inch. That apart, the resolution of Google Nexus 7 is 1280-by-800 -- far lower than the 2048-by-1536 on the iPad with a Retina display. Not to mention, the Nexus 7 is WiFi only (and Bluetooth); while iPad is available with a 3G connectivity.

Does that mean Nexus 7 is a competitor to the Amazon Kindle Fire? ---------
