Idea Cellular in good knack in Apr-Jun 2011 quarter, 3G key to continue stronger growth
You may be wondering, what impetus made idea launch such a bold ad of its 3G services. The ad, which makes a blunt statement on India’s huge population, with “first TV then Biwi” jingle, takes force from idea’s’ great showing of late, compared to its rivals.

Idea has seen a strong growth in the 13 established telecom circles in recent times and this continues to boost overall performance of Idea Cellular in the June 2011 quarter.

Notably, Idea managed to sell minutes on its network at a slightly higher rate after a long period of stagnation in per-minute rates.

Idea, India’s fourth largest telecom operator by revenue has been reporting a gradual revival in its established 13 circles. Since the September 2010 quarter, revenue from these regions has increased by nearly 22%. And the good thing is, the growth is accompanied by higher profitability notwithstanding the pressure on tariff rates. Its operating margin has expanded by 260 basis points to 29.6% despite a 3% fall in per minute revenue during the period.

However, the strong momentum in the relatively older circles is partially undone by its operations in the nine new circles, including Mumbai, Bihar, and TN among others. Though revenue in these circles has increased by a strong 42% in the past 12 months, the growth was not enough to cover operating expenses. The new operations are yet to break even. The operating loss from these operations widened to 139.7 crore during the June 2011 quarter from 117.3 crore in the previous quarter, has made many experts worried. But experts are positive about the company, as it is gaining a strong foothold in the domestic telecom market. Notably, Idea has the distinction of having one of the highest proportions of active subscribers among peers. According to the latest TRAI data of May 2011, 90 percent of Idea subscribers had an active account. ---------

Mobile Number Portability Service in India starts Today
The much awaited (deadline shifted many times) Mobile Number Portability service will finally be launched today – 25 November 2010, confirms Press Information Bureau.

The very important milestone for Indian consumer will be flagged off by honorable Union Minister of Communications & IT Mr Kapil Sibal with Shri Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Chief Minister of Haryana.

Haryana will be the first state of India to get the Mobile Number Portability.

Rest of India will have to wait for the next announcement from Press Information Bureau.

Some FAQs:

What is Mobile Number Portability service?

A mobile phone subscriber can change their service provider (Like Airtel, idea, BSNL, Vodafone etc) at their own will while retaining their old numbers. In simple with MNP, same number can be have across operators.

What will be the benefit of MNP to subscribers and the operators?

A subscriber will be saved from propagating his/her phone number, every time he/she changes the operator(service provider like Airtel, idea, BSNL, Vodafone etc). The bigger advantage for a subscriber comes in the form of better network connectivity with competitive tariff plans; only those service providers who will deliver on these two fronts will retain a customer.

From the service providers point of view; MNP brings in an opportunity to them to consolidate their market share—Give best service to the customer and weed out their rivals. In essence, this will help un-crowd the telecom market place. If service providers believe there is place for three or four service providers in Indian telecom market; then MNP gives an opportunity to make that a reality.

Who is eligible for MNP?

1) For change of current service provider a subscriber should have used the service for a minimum of 90 days.Once 90 days have been lapsed, the person can go for MNP.

2) To port his/her number, a subscriber has to send an SMS (PORTMobile Number) from the number he wishes to be ported, to number 1900. On doing this the person will receive a Unique Porting Code (UPC) via SMS from his current service provider. Post-paid subscribers before making the porting request, have to make sure that their last bill has been paid failing which the request for change to new service provider shall be rejected. NOTE: In the case of pre-paid subscriber any balance amount left WILL NOT BE CARRIED FORWARD when the number is transferred to the new service provider.

3) The subscriber will need to apply in the prescribed application form to the chosen NEW service provider quoting his/her UPC which will act as a reference while filling up the application form with NEW service provider.

4) The new service provider will then take action to get the required processes completed to enable the subscriber to get connected to its network.

5) Porting has to be completed within 7 working days

6) TRAI has put a ceiling of Rs. 19/- on porting charges which the new service provider may collect from the subscriber. In short the NEW service provider cannot charge above Rs 19 as porting charges.

What is the Vodafone - Indian Government tax dispute all about
In 2007, Vodafone acquired 67 percent of Hutchison’s Indian mobile phone operations for $10.7 billion.

The transaction took place between Netherlands-based Vodafone International Holdings BV and Hutchison, based in Hong Kong. The Hutchison stake Vodafone acquired was owned by a Cayman Islands-based holding company.

After the deal, Indian tax department told Vodafone that it has to pay $2billion to Indian Government.

Vodafone argued that since the transaction took place between two overseas companies (Netherlands-based Vodafone International Holdings BV and Hutchison, based in Hong Kong); and the target asset was registered in the Cayman Islands, hence Vodafone doesn’t owe taxes in India.

Countering the argument the Indian Government told Vodafone that although the share transfer was of a Cayman Islands entity, the deal had an Indian connection.

The dispute is sub-judice. ---------

State of Internet and telecom progress in Castro’s Cuba
Cuba’s Internet and telecom connectivity is well below the average for the Caribbean and Latin America in 2009, according to a government report released this week. Despite the legalization of mobile phones in 2008.

Below are some of the numbers indicating to the state of internet and telecom progress in Fidel Castro’s Cuba:

1) There were just 1.8 million phone subscribers in the country. This makes for 15.5 phones for every 100 inhabitants. This is the lowest in the region, according to the United Nations International Telecommunications Union.

2) Out of the 1.8 million, some 800,000 are mobiles.

3) The number of computers in the country is 700,000 or 62 per 1,000 residents. Compared with more than 160 per thousand residents in the region. Many of these are in government offices, health and education facilities.

4) There is no broadband in Cuba. Although a small number of users slow internet connections.

5) The number of internet users in the country provided by the National Statistics Office Cuba, is 1.6 million Internet users, or 14.2 per 100 residents. Which Reuters believes pertains to Government intranet. In contrast, In Jamaica, another Caribbean country Internet access was 53.27 per 100 inhabitants in 2008. In the Dominican Republic it ‘s 25.87 percent and in Haiti 10.42 percent, the ITU reported.

6) Access to satellite television was also severely restricted. In Cuba, satellite TV access is illegal without special permission from the government and authorities regularly raid neighborhoods and homes in search of receptors.

Cuba blames the 48 year old United States Embargo for its communications backwardness.
Cuba's failure to embrace modern telecoms is a major complaint among citizens under 50 years old, who cite it as one of the reasons they seek to migrate abroad. ---------
