Are you using an advertisement blocker in your web browser?

Are you using an advertisement blocker enabled browser on your mobile, Tablet, Laptop or Desktop PC?

Are you using an add on or an extension with the web browser of your choice such as Google Chrome, Firefox Safari or any other mobile/tablet/PC?

If YES, then without any delay disable ad blocker on your web browser OR remove any browser add-ons or extension you may have installed on your web browser , be it on mobile/tablet/laptop/PC.

Ad blockers on web-browsers or ad blocker extensions or add-ons installed on browsers found to indulge in Personal Data Theft (or Personal Data harvesting)

You may have heard a saying : There is No Free lunch.

It means that any service which is being offered for free, might not be free of cost. There are some costs involved.

According to some studies, the ad blocker or advertisement blocker extensions for browsers or browsers enabled ad blockers have been found harvesting or storing or stealing the personal data of millions of unsuspecting consumers. This personal data harvesting is taking place across ad blockers and; includes the most popular names.

The data so harvested (collected) is then sold to those businesses for whom such personal data is valuable. For example, not only your sensitive data such as credit card information, tax returns, medical records, your connected surveillance videocam footage links, travel history and other sensitive data is valuable for any such buyer but also some very simple looking data such as your browsing history, the products you window shop online, terms you search etc. is a valuable information for the business buyers. All such data helps them understand your search habits, buying habits and the frequency of your spends online.

According to some research conducted by reputed research firms online, the global business for such harvested data is continuously growing and; because of the habit of mobile users using utilities such as ad blockers etc. to save time or to have a distraction free web browsing, the data harvesting business is likely to grow at a high rate in near future.

According to an independent cyber security research mid 2019, the unlimited access of such harvested data was found to be given to a Company buyer for as low as $10-$50.

How to Protect Yourself From online Personal Information Theft or Data Theft or Harvesting

You may be thinking why, I'm not using the word Theft directly. The reason is simple: Most users who use ad-blocker enabled browsers or ad blocker extensions do not read the TOS (Terms of Service) document while installing the browser or an extension. They simply agree to the long TOS document. So in real, neither the browsers nor the browser add-ons/extensions are harvesting data without your permission. It is only that you gave them the access to the data without reading the TOS.

So what you must do to protect yourself from such personal Data Harvesting or Data Theft:

  1. Disable any additional functionalities in your Tablet/Laptop/Desktop/ Mobile web browser :  Keep your browser to as simply as you can. Note that nobody is immune to some data harvesting but the smaller the number of functions you enable on your browser, the lesser data you will give to the browser. Some amount of data harvesting is necessary for your browser such as Chrome, Firefox, Opera etc. to offer you good services and keep the browser happy. But the moment you start adding additional utilities such as advertisement blockers etc. the more personal information you will have to offer in return.
  2. Remove web or mobile browser extensions / Add-ons: The reason is the same as above. The more extensions you install the more personal information you give. Installing extensions from Play Store or any other such App market place becomes additionally risky because mobile usage data reveals that people use the same mobile device for both surfing and banking, purchasing purposes.
  3. Keep your web/mobile browser to as simple as possible.
----------------------------------------------------------

The increased use of mobile devices and economical mobile internet charges have increased internet usage on mobile phones and devices. In addition, the availability of thousands of mobile apps, browser utilities, apps and browser extensions on Play Store etc. have increased the habit of using such free utilities. But in a World of where the risks of data theft or personal information theft are real, it is good to keep one's web/mobile browser to as simple as possible and simply disable/remove utilities/addons such as ad blockers, social media sharing extensions etc.

Firefox 5.0 Blazes Ahead of Launch!
The next-gen Firefox browser with a codename of 5.0 is already making its way for the big launch. But guess what? Some folks at Mozilla have already had their spoilers done. That’s because the blazing fire have already unleashed its smoke via an FTP portal.

But what’s even greater is the fact that the file can now be downloaded along with its new features that will most likely include an improved canvas. The new version will also be packed with support for CSS transitions and other language formats.

The Firefox 5.0 has officially been set to be released this June 21. Meanwhile, Mozilla has also scheduled to release its Firefox 6 Beta on the first week of July.

Firefox overtakes Internet Explorer in Europe
According to website analytics firm, Statcounter, Internet Explorer has lost its crown in major market for first time.

Mozilla Firefox overtook Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) to become the number one browser in Europe in December 2010.

European Browser market standings In December, on the basis of market share held:

Firefox___________38.11%
IE________________37.52%
Google Chrome_____14.58%

According to Statcounter, the reason behind the new standings is: Google's Chrome is stealing share from Internet Explorer while Firefox is mainly maintaining its existing share. Google Chrome which commanded 5.06 percent market share in December 2009, grew 188 percent in the lats one year. Another reason for the changed supremacy, according to Statcounter, is becoming visible, the impact of the agreement between European Commission competition authorities and Microsoft, to offer EU users a choice and menu of browsers from March last.

IE is still the king in North America:

In North Aerica, IE still rules the market, with a market share much above the number two, Firefox.

IE__________ 48.92%
Firefox______ 26.7%
Chrome______12.82%
Safari________10.16% ---------

Microsoft Unveils Internet Explorer 9 Beta: Read a compilation of what is New
On Wednesday Microsoft released the beta version of its new Web browser, Internet Explorer 9 at the Web event in San Francisco.

According to the company: Internet Explorer 9 has new and improvised features to enhance the user experience, and increased speed (with new emerging Web standards the software incorporates the most HTML5 support features). In addition, IE 9 is designed to be the most trusted browser as it has a robust set of built-in security, privacy and reliability technologies that keep customers safer online.

What is new to Internet Explorer 9 Beta (according to the company and others, though you can test and see new features yourself too; you should be using Windows 7 to try it):

1) Clean browser user interface -- Pinned Sites (allows users to access favorite websites directly from the Windows taskbar without having to first open the browser), Jump Lists (a quick and easy way to get to a common website task without having to first launch the browser), Tear-off tabs and Windows Aero snap tabs, and add-on performance advisor.
Basically the Pinned Sites features go hand in hand with the JumpList capabilities. Complementing each other, they allow a user to quickly create a new e-mail message, check their inbox, change the music station, accept a friend invitation or see breaking news.
2) Re-architected to be the only Web browser to focus on bringing sites front and center through Windows 7(Windows 7 integration), enabling a new class of experience on the Web with partners such as Facebook, Red Bull GmbH, Quiksilver Inc., Rough Guides Ltd., eHow Inc., LiveStrong, Twitter, Dailymotion, the Wall Street Journal, CNN and Orbitz LLC, as well as top design studios such as Metia, Soleil Noir S.A.S. and Joshua Davis Studios. This aspect is highlighted this way by this article: the first of a new generation of Web browser programs that tap into the powerful processors on board newer computers to make Web sites load and run faster. In a way the writers are stressing on the recent browser roll outs’ ability to channelise some of the load to graphics processors by taking advantage of the hardware and software features.

3) IE 9 focuses on the applications with a clean experience (something which blurs the distinction between a Web site and a traditional desktop application); and more pixels dedicated to the website, not the browser, allowing sites to shine.

Some of the stories, are presenting the Beta IE9 roll out more visually, Like:

IE9, arrives with a more minimalist look and a few new tricks that start to blur the distinction between a Web site and a traditional desktop application. In addition, taking cues from Google's stripped-down Chrome browser, Microsoft's IE9 comes with far fewer buttons, icons and tool bars, De-cluttering the top of the screen.

IE9’s frame is translucent, and while browsing the Web, IE9 can be subtly adorned with small icons with signature colors of the Web sites being viewed. In other words only the controls essential for browsing are displayed in the browser frame, quietly in glass or translucent background, letting people browse and experience all that their sites have to offer.

Despite losing some of its market share to rivals like Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome , Internet Explorer is still at the top of the browser market having the bear share(though it comes bundled with Windows operating system; many people like it simplicity as well.

What New Features Firefox 4 will have?
Mozilla on Tuesday launched the fourth beta of Firefox 4, adding bookmark and password synchronization, and revamping how people manage tabs.

What new features Firefox 4 will have?

1) Firefox 4 Beta attempts for the first time at accelerating Firefox 4's page rendering by tapping the graphics processor. The hardware acceleration, available only in Windows Vista and Windows 7, is disabled by default.

Firefox 4 Beta which calls its tab manager "Panorama", lets users collect tabs into sets, graphically displays those sets, and when users open a tab, shows only those tabs within the group. Mozilla, the maker of Firefox, considers this as the next step in the evolution of tabs.
Notably none of Firefox’s rivals have tried something like Panorama. Apple, for example, introduced "Top Sites" to Safari last year, while Google's Chrome has had a similar "Most Visited" feature since it launched in 2008. But both simply graphically represent frequently-visited sites using thumbnails.
No information on this front comes from Microsoft whose Internet Explorer 9 (IE9), is scheduled to ship as a beta on Sept 15.

2) Firefox Sync, another major feature of Beta 4: This feature is not new to Firefox. It’s the same service that keeps bookmarks, passwords, browser history, open tabs and other data consistent across multiple computers and devices since 2007. Sync has been available to users of earlier Firefox editions through an add-on or some free app; but this time the functionality has been built into the browser.
Chrome and Opera have had integrated synchronization since 2008.

3) Hardware acceleration: Firefox Beta 4 is the first browser to debut the technology of hardware acceleration. But, in a restricted manner in terms of operating systems supported by it. Hardware acceleration, is available only to Windows operating systems (requires Windows Vista or Windows 7); that too turned off by default. To switch it on, users must edit the browser's "about:config" file using instructions Mozilla has posted on its site.
The reason for this restricted availability is that Firefox 4, like IE9, relies on Windows' Direct2D API (application programming interface) to boost rendering speeds by shifting some chores from the computer's central processor to the graphics processor. In simple hardware acceleration needs graphics infrastructure, so that some browser page management can be thrust on that infrastructure; allowing faster page management.

Mozilla plans to end the beta status for Firefox 4 sometime in October November.

Firefox 4 Beta 4 can be downloaded for Windows, Mac and Linux from Mozilla's site in 35 different languages. ---------

Kind of users web browsers have
Pingdon who studied the upgrade pattern for Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari and Opera of users accessing its control panel found some interesting differences between the kinds of users different browsers have. Although Pingdom doesn’t have actual upgrade statistics, they made the assertions by comparing their data with the changes in the market share for the various versions of web browsers. In addition they used data fromStatCounter, who provide browser statistics based on tracking of approximately three million websites globally.

Pingdom got following insights from their study:

Browsers adopt different approaches to encourage or handle upgrades -- Completely automated (Like Google Chrome) or aggressive promotion of new versions (Like Firefox), or a more laid-back approach (IE). And these have their bearings on the upgrade or new version adoption by users. Automated ones, get the best upgrade results, as in this case a user is not asked, followed by aggressive promotion.

User Upgrade behaviour points to different types of users: With 9 out of every 10 PC users in the world using Microsoft’s Windows operating sytem which installs Internet Explorer by default: the intent to use a different browser other than IE points to technologically savvy user. The study finds that Upgrade behavior will in most cases be tied to the kind of users the browser has attracted (Although the upgrade strategy adopted by the browser has also its bearing on the new version adoption too).

IE’s slow upgrade rate, partly points to the technologically conservative user. Again the fact that Windows nests in majority of PCs in this world; logic also says most IE users will be technologically consvervative. Hence IE is slow on upgrade race too.

As Windows operating system is most used in operating system in world PCs; coupled with Microsoft bundling IE with the operating system, it can can be assumed that majority of IE users will be non-tech savvy users—those who buy a PC pre installed , and just use whatever the PC offers. As a result their conservative approach to browsers in particular and PC matters in general is understood.

Pingdom finds the tech savviness of a user directly related to the pace of upgrade adoption.

Pingdom arrived at teh result from the share of different User bowsers accessing pingdom control panel:

IE________________14%
Chrome___________ 21%
Firefox____________ 51%

The above shares of different browsers are very different from the internet average, where IE has more than 50% market share and Firefox and Chrome significantly less.

Thus Pingdom sees its own data pointing to the kind of users a particular browser has. Pingdom defines its users largely as tech savvy; comprising largely of webmasters, sysadmins, web designers, and site owners etc. Hence sees Firefox and Chrome attracting more users than IE, as obvious.

Thus Pingdom study brings home an important point the pace of browser upgrade adoption points to the kind of user a particular browser has; although the strategy adopted by a browser to encourage users to go for an upgrade has its bearing on pace of new browser version adoption too.

In addition, Tech-saviness is directly related to new browser version adoption. As a tech savvy audience (on average), is more inclined to upgrade to the latest version quickly after it arrives. ---------

IE loses market share in Europe
In a post that I wrote at the beginning of this month, I shared with you the following:

“Not just 20 days have lapsed since Microsoft showing of “Web browser choice screen” to Internet Explorer users in Europe, and browser maker Opera, revealed at the beginning of this moth that Since choice screen roll out, Opera downloads have more than tripled in major European countries, such as Belgium, France, Spain, Poland and the UK. Now with just 20 more days added to the life span of choice screen and more positive signs are becoming visible. It appears thwarting a monopoly and giving players level playing ground, do benefit consumers.”

And now as we near the end of this month, more news regarding the positive effects of the choice screen roll out are becoming visible.

According to web statistics firm Statcounter, Microsoft’s IE's share of all Web surfing has in March dropped by 2.5 percentage points in France (compared to February), in Britain by 1 percentage point and in Italy by 1.3 points.

The good run of Norway's Opera Software, the fourth largest browser firm, has continued. Opera has seen downloads more than double in Europe from normal levels due to the choice screen, with downloads in Italy, Spain and Poland more than tripling.

Number 2 browser firm, Mozilla, has also seen a significant growth in the number of new Firefox users as a result of the Ballot Choice screen. The company is quite optimistic about the positive effects of the choice screen when it rolls out across all countries.

But things are not the same for all browsers which appear on the Microsoft’s choice screen. Only those who appear on the main screen (5 in number), or first sight screen, are seeing the significant growth (except IE). Those which are visible by scrolling the web page (7 in number) are not that fortunate. But no one should make a hue and cry about this aspect; as these 7 browsers have never had significant share compared to the 5 browsers, who are given the prime real estate of the choice screen.

Will keep you updating on this. Thanks @tech24hours. ---------

Opera gains after Microsoft starts showing Web browser choice screen
Not even 20 days have lapsed since Microsoft started offering (limited showing since mid feb and full rollout since march 1) a “Web browser choice screen” to Internet Explorer users in Europe, as required by the European Commission; but results are already showing.
Browser maker Opera said on Wednesday it had seen a surge in downloads of its browser after Microsoft started making it easier for Europeans to choose smaller rivals' browsers. Since choice screen roll out, Opera downloads have more than tripled in major European countries, such as Belgium, France, Spain, Poland and the UK.

Encouraged by the new market dynamics, Opera launched a new version of its browser this week.

opera is among 12 browsers, including Microsoft's own Internet Explorer, Mozilla's Firefox, Apple Inc's Safari and Google Inc's Chrome, that the world's biggest software maker is showing on the more than 100 million old and new PCs that use its software.

On December 16, European Union regulators accepted Microsoft's pledge to give European consumers better access to rival Internet browsers in Windows, ending a long antitrust dispute with the U.S. software maker.

What surge in Opera downloads owing to offering choice by Microsoft points to?

It shows that monopoly does harm healthy competition. Big companies do have the power to stifle smaller players. The stifling power of big players becomes more powerful in the PC software business, where most users don’t bother to look for choices (the whole idea of a PC is to offer choices at each step) unless choices are rolled out in front of their eyes, with one click to opt in. ---------

Google Upgrades Chrome To Version 2.0
By Mani Raj

Google upgraded its browser Chrome to the latest Version 2.0.

It now includes various new features which were not a part of the older version. Now it includes full screen mode, form auto-fill and the ability to remove thumbnails from the browser's most-visited New Tab page.

The Google Chrome team said they worked hard to make the new version more stable than the previous one. They also fixed over 300 bugs that cause system crashes.

Although, Chrome 2.0 does not offer numerous new features but it does incorporate several important capabilities that are offered by its rival browsers like Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer.

It may not be the best browser for handling all the aspects of web navigating but it does deliver when you feel the need for speed.
