R Karthik Shekhar , founder of India's first union for IT/ITeS industry speaks !

He quit a high-profile job at a multinational IT firm, to start India's first union for IT/ITeS industry in September 2005.

Currently, UNITES’ secretary general for India. UNITES is the shortened form for “Union for Information & Technology Enabled Services”; R Karthik Shekhar shows his concern over the opaque working of IT industry, and the general “Who cares” attitude prevalent in the industry regarding working hours and etc.

The points he raises are:
1) extending the work hours by more than 8 hours a day and 48 hours a week
2) Companies firing employees, while simultaneously making them work for more hours
3) The Government apathy towards the IT industry, need for some bail out provisions.
4) Contradictory claims of the IT firms—Doing great business, but making employees to work more and cutting work force too.
5) IT industry has a five days a week, work model, as their clients, have five day a week too. So it can’t be an excuse for extending the work hours beyond 8 hours a day.
6) It industry doesn’t pay for extra hours.
