On the basis of market share, Microsoft’s Windows Mobile was the fifth largest smartphone operating system in the world. The market share dropped from 9.3 percent in Q2 2009(Apr-Jun 2009) to 5 percent in the second quarter 2010.
The number of Windows Mobile phones sold in second quarter 2010 is 3.1 million units.
The arrival of phones running Windows Phone 7 are badly needed to give the ailing platform a boost. Not only new phones, but profitable ecosystem containing interesting and useful applications is also needed. Just unveiled Microsoft Xbox LIVE Games for Windows Phone 7 is microsoft’s attempt to replicate Apple's blooming gaming apps scene for iPhone, iPod touches and iPad.
