At present the definition of broadband in India is:
An always-on connectivity with following speeds for the wired and wireless connections
Wired (Ethernet) ______________________256 kbps
Wireless____________________________ 144 kbps
But the Upload and Download speeds for both the above types of connections do not match what is being claimed. According to Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI) president, , the actual speed for the two connections during peak times are:
Actual speed got on a 256 kbps connection at peak times:_____________30-40 kbps
Actual speed got on a 144 kbps connection at peak times: _____________9-10 kbps
What are the claims doing rounds in the Indian internet sphere at present:
--Tata Teleservices’s recently launched Photon+, a plug and play device claims to offer data speeds of up to 3.1 mbps. This speed is about 20 times faster than existing wireless mobile technologies.
--Another product from the same company is — Power Launcher — an Ethernet (wired)-based broadband product. The product offers speeds up to 100 mbps.
--Reliance Netconnect Broadband Plus, a wireless CDMA technology based broadband product has downlink and uplink speeds of up to 3.1 mbps and 1.8 mbps respectively.
Thus the recent products are claiming to offer speeds that are over 20 times faster for the existing wireless broadband connections, and 10 times than average broadband (wired) connections in the country.
Now you have to assess their claims. And please tell us too, what you feel about these claims and our numbers.
