Cellphone sales will decrease about 4 percent in 2009

According to a Gartner research,

Global Handset sales fell 9.4 percent in the first quarter of 2009 ( Q1).

Global mobile handset sales in Q1 2009______________269.1 million units
Global mobile handset sales in Q1 2008______________297    million units 
Decline (Year on Year)____________________________ 9.4 percent



The research firm has predicted this about the Handset market in 2009.

--Cellphone sales to users will decrease about 4 percent, compared to 2008.

--Handset makers' production volumes would fall around 10 percent, compared to 2008.


Possible reasons:

--Customers avoiding new handset purchases amid recession

--Retailers unwinding thier unsold stocks, that started accumulating in the late 2008. --------
