Google announced on Friday that it’s going to buy social networking app maker Slide for an undisclosed amount.
The deal symbolizes Google’s intent to make some headway into the world of social networking; after mostly failed attempts in the past, including the poorly received Orkut and Google Buzz. Though the terms weren't disclosed, various sources are putting the value at between $180 million and $230 million.
With Slide by its side, Google plans to invest even more to make Google services socially aware and expand these capabilities for our users across the Web.
Slide is an established player in the social networking app market; with an already well-established presence on Facebook, MySpace and other networks. Some popular social games by Slide are -- SuperPoke! Pets, Rock Riot, Top Friends and FunSpace.
Once among the most popular apps on Facebook, Slide’s userbase has slid significantly in the past two years. Though, Slide still has 15 million active users; it stands at number 14 among its developer rivals( according to AppData.com).
Google-Slide deal points more on the intent of Google, which only recently also made an investment in social app leader Zynga, reportedly worth $150 million. Zynga has a user base of 268 million, five times the nearest competitor; and 10 times that of Slide.
