Google launches Voice Actions for Android market

Voice commands are getting more useful with each passing day, at least for Android users. Yesterday, Voice commands on the Android platform were expanded beyond a simple Google search, to allow new commands such as sending a text message or an e-mail.

Google, yesterday, announced Voice Actions for Android at an event in San Francisco; explaining the new commands in a blog post, along with a video.

The list of Voice Actions on Google's blog include:

1) the ability to ”send text” to a contact with a spoken message

2) say "listen to" for a particular artist, song or album

3) the capability to find the song on a variety of Internet radio sites or other locations

4) Directing a call to a business or contact

5) Sending an e-mail

6) Finding a Web site

7) Making a note to yourself

8) Navigating to a location, getting directions, or getting a map for a location

9) Ability to set an alarm on the phone via voice

In addition to making the Voice Actions announcement, Google also announced an updated version of its Google search widget for Android that refines typed searches.

The Voice Actions capability is pre-installed on the new Motorola Droid 2 that went on sale with Verizon Wireless today. The phone runs Android 2.2 (or Froyo).

Other phones that have been updated to Android 2.2 or Froyo will require the Voice Actions app update from Android Market. Some phones that have Android 2.2 updates available to them are Nexus One, HTC Evo 4G and the original Droid. The owners of these updated phones will need to download Voice Search, containing Voice Actions, from the Android Market. --------
