Study Shows Its Hard To Keep Up With most Friends On Facebook, Twitter

Its easy to find a lot of friends on various social networking sites but the difficult part is trying to keep up with all of them.

A study done by the researchers at Indiana University concluded that the maximum number of friends a user can effectively keep in touch with on the most popular social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter is around 150 people.

Bruno Gonclaves and his team of researchers closely observed the web of 380 million tweets which were sent by 3 million Twitter users over a period of four years. They found that most people started increasing the number of Twitter friends until they felt overwhelmed after a certain point and the researchers noticed that the users at this point started focusing only on those contacts with whom they were very strongly connected to. This saturation point took place, for most users around 150 friends.

Its strange that Robin Dunbar, a British anthropologist, predicted that same number as the maximum number of friends a person can keep up with while conducting his study of other primates in the 1990s.

The various social networking sites have given us the opportunity to expand our network of friends and acquaintances but when it comes to actual friendships we are limited to how many we can truly stay in touch with. --------
