Mastering 2D development in Unity3D | Book for Intermediate Game Developers
Game development has picked up the last few years. RPG games such as Activision's Call of Duty have surely constituted to the craze. Positively or negatively. If a top game maker can't make best games, can I (you, the game developer ask).

For game developers, the Unity 3D is a great tool. The game-making engine is free, and there's a very helpful community online. Resources are aplenty as well. But there are two types of learners, those who can learn from the free resources online and those who need a book to learn.

Mastering Unity 2D Game Development by Simon Jackson is for the learners of the second type.  The book is a resource to create a 2D side-scrolling RPG.

The Book :

Mastering Unity 2D Game Development teaches the skills with an overview of the project that you'll be undertaking.

After that it teaches you how to build a character, and includes instructions on how to use Unity's sprite system.

After that you are taught the animation part.

...then you create your on-player characters, inventory system, combat systems. Then finally you taught how to pack and deploy your game. The book teaches you how to market your game as well.

As happens with most of these books, you need to be crazy about coding; else you will not be able to continue with the over 400 pages. This also means the addictiveness to quickly consult online resources for better understanding and correction of errors.

A keen learner will surely get plenty of tips and tricks.

Opinion: The book Mastering Unity 2D Game Development is NOT for beginners or who just starting with Unity 3D. The book requires a good familiarity with the engine and the C# programming language (the syntax, OOP etc.).

The book was written when Unity3D version 4.3 was in implementation and hence refers to some UI elements that have since been changed.

New Book of Designer who collaborated directly with Steve Jobs, released
New Book presents design for change - design as a strategic and holistic way of finding and creating sustainable solutions that are also successful in an economic sense.

A new book, titled "Design Forward: Creative Strategy at the Core of Sustainable", is Hartmut Esslinger's (one of the most influential designers and thinkers internationally, as well as the founder of frog design) attempt to explain how ‘strategic design’ in business and society can and must bring about positive change through innovative creativity.

The book's key attribute is how it has strategically extended definition of design as a convergent and humanistic amalgamation of technology, the environment and the economy.

Esslinger has not boarded this philosophy now, his design has always been a key strategic discipline, which he has practiced successfully in companies such as Wega, Louis Vuitton, Sony, SAP and especially Apple.

At Apple he collaborated directly with Steve Jobs. Therefore the book also attempts to establish a wide range of creative innovators as top executives, who are equally influential and occupy leading positions in economics, education and politics.

particularly fascinating in the photographs are the ones showing Tablet like prototypes from Apple. What is interesting is that the prototypes, though mimic the form and layout of Apple's ipad, appear artistically bland. For instance the prototype shows, pointed corners and oblique edges. This makes one infer that, Steve Jobs indeed contributed a lot to product designs, aesthetically.

The Book,  Design Forward, tires to look every future projection as based on some design in history.

What else the Book Offers:

1) The Book hows relevant and richly illustrated case studies taken from Esslinger’s career with frog design.

2) Also shows selected works by his students at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, where he teaches as a professor of Industrial Design.

3) The content of DESIGN FORWARD supplements Esslinger’s previous publication A FINE LINE.

4) With contributions by the students from the Master Class ID2 at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and by other academic partners.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos Once Offered $12 million for Netflix
Former Apple evangelist and now a celebrated keynote speaker, Guy Kawasaki still laments, how he once, declined Yahoo!'s CEO offer. Those were hey days for Yahoo. The fortunes of both Yahoo! and Guy never rose since then.

Netflix founder CEO, Reed Hastings, may also have lamented his decision of flatly rejecting Amazon's acquisition Offer in late 1990s.

Yes, Amazon once wanted to buy Netflix. In 1999, when Netflix was still a struggling start-up, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos offered CEO Reed Hastings $12 million. The offer Reed flatly rejected.

This and things like these, have been revealed in an upcoming book, titled "Netflixed: The Epic Battle for America's Eyeballs " a history of the DVD-and-streaming pioneer, that's due to go on sale Thursday. The Book is authored by Gina Keating, the former Reuters reporter.

The book further says that, the Netflix CEO even tried to negotiate to keep Amazon out of the DVD mail-order rental business.

According to "Netflixed," founders Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph met with the Amazon CEO in 1999, after he indicated he might want to partner with Netflix in some way. "Hastings also wanted to discuss selling Netflix to Amazon if the price was right. The only problem was that Hastings was "less than impressed with Amazon's $12 million offer." Although the author, doesn't reveal how much Reed wanted; it was later reported that the amount demanded was $50 million.

The Information: A fascinating Book on the History of Human Communication
A book on the History if Human Communication arrived in march this year. The book is simply fascinating, eye opening, engaging (70 percent of of its length) for anyone who wants to have a glimpse (thorough) of how humans reached the age of internet from the years of 1800s.

The Book:

The Information: A History, A Theory, A Flood , by James Gleick begins with the “talking drums” of Africa and traverses the creation of writing, the ingenious inventions of the steam age, information theory’s origins and development, and ends with the current state of the internet communication.

The book includes the profiles of relatively lesser known inventors such as Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace( who in the 1800s envisioned computers made of gears and powered by steam), and Claude Shannon (a World War II code breaker, without whose achievements computers could not have progressed).

Not limiting itself to the PC related information growth, the book also traces and elaborates the infiltration of information theory into other fields, such as genetics. Among the examples given in this context is the case of DNA, which previously considered mostly a topic of chemistry, came under the realms of technology, when Watson, Crick and Wilkins realized in early 1960s, DNA’s purpose was to convey instructions about how to construct organisms. No wonder the idea was revolutionary even for the scientists at the time.

What makes the book special is that, the author sees the information much more than n just the contents of over-stacked brick and mortar libraries and Web servers. The book asserts that the Information is the driving force which takes the entire Universe forward.

Pros:

As said the book is an eye opening, fascinating, baffling and engaging book on the History of Information and Communication.

Cons:

1) Some readers can find it over simplifying, a certain areas.

2) The discussions of logic proofs, unsolvable mathematics proofs, and particularly scientific topics could be unnerving to some readers. But this unnerving feeling exists only for about 20 percent of book pages.

Conclusion:

Regardless of any limitations, The Information is an engaging book, for anyone who is interested in the history of Human Communications and Humans. ---------

For Inventors who seriously want To Make Money, Here’s a New Book
Not every inventor (especially the new ones) wants to make Millions with his Invention.

Still, an invention which makes money is never an uninvited guest.

Whether an invention makes small, significant or truck loads of money; it is always better than the one which makes none.

And making money from one’s inventions requires much more than a sharp mind, steep curiosity and out-of-the-box creativity. It also requires knowledge of the worldly ways to safeguard one’s invention, by way of patents, packaging the prototype well, so that it appeals to the person/company who buys its rights for commercial replication, and many small but important things.

Simply stated, if you are an inventor, who loves to create things, and wants to make money out of it as well; then a new book — Your Complete Guide to Making Millions with Your Simple Idea or Invention: Insider Secrets You Need to Know – is for you.

THE BOOK IS ATTRACTNG GREAT REVIEWS:

The book is getting great reviews from experts and educators, who have devoted decades of their lives teaching & representing innovation, legal framework around innovations, innovators & entrepreneurs and patents.

Gene Quinn, President & Founder of IPWatchdog Inc., Patent Attorney has this to say about the book,

“For over ten years I have been writing articles and commentaries in hopes of educating independent inventors and small businesses on patent and intellectual property issues. For those who are new to the innovation business it can be an extremely daunting task to come up to speed on the topic, particularly given the diverse, sometimes counter-intuitive, issues and obstacles that need to be successfully navigated. I have long wanted to write a book for inventors myself, but now there is no need for that endeavor. As this new book is much like what I would have written, if I write a book on the topic. Time and time again as I read this book I found myself nodding my head in complete agreement. For new inventors who seriously want to succeed this book should be required reading.”

FOR WHOM IS THE BOOK?

· An inventor/entrepreneur who clearly sees the US economy continue to trend towards an innovation and technology based economy intellectual property rights, and patent rights in particular. To such clarity that, he has convinced himself that the manufacturing jobs are gone and Prosperity is tied to innovation.

· An inventor who believes that a pre-requisite to successfully innovating and making money from innovation is to understand the processes in play outside innovation.

· A person who wants to have at his side, everything advised about ‘innovation as business’ in the past few decades and today, in a concise easy to understand format.

· For an inventor who has understood that he is far more likely to succeed if he treats inventing as a business. And for whom inventing stuff is more than just an American dream – for whom inventing goes well beyond the “cool” factor, innovative contributions; one who wants to like to succeed financially, sees nothing wrong in making money from his invention.

· An inventor, who understands that innovation needs money as well.

WHAT THE BOOK OFFERS:

The book has been written with one overarching theme: How to approach inventing in a business way.
Inside this overarching theme, the book covers broad to minute questions & issues faced by a new inventor, which include the trials and tribulations of inventors, the need to have a direction in their innovation effort, the importance of time management, scheduling and meeting promised deadlines. This the book does in an uncommon level of understanding with respect to both the questions inventors have and the knowledge they absolutely need to know to succeed.

That apart the book also talks about patents. Reflecting on the patent section of the book, Gene Quinn, Patent Attorney, says that many might find it surprising that some of the best things said in the book are those things that provide a reality check on the importance of patents. Others found the authors take on patents , simply spot on.

In author’s own words,

“ patents are not the end of all be all, but rather they are a means to an end. Obtaining a patent is not the ‘holy grail’; rather, ‘the holy grail of inventing is getting your invention into the hands of consumers and making a profit."

Majority of inventors today want to do just that. If you are one among theese, then Read Your Complete Guide to Making Millions with Your Simple Idea or Invention: Insider Secrets You Need to Know, not only once, but keep consulting it whenever the need be.

Likeonomics is NOT About “How To get More Facebook Likes”, it’s about how to Be Successful Abroad
Many a times businesses and entrepreneurs feel that if they are successful at their home countries; they will be successful in abroad as well. A new book, titled Likeonomics by Rohit Bhargava, claims it’s not always the case.

According to the upcoming book, having an international background might look exceptional on your resume, but just because you're a phenomenal leader in your own country doesn't guarantee you'll find success as an international executive.

Rohit Bhargava says that following to business protocol in different cultures is not enough, when it come to success in a new market. What is required is to be able to influence people who already think of you as an "outsider." And if you don’t have ‘it’ a complex mix of right personality, value system, in conformance to your new battleground or work country, success will be miles away from you. A scenario which will not only cost your company a lot of money, but will hurt your resume as well.

Hence the book cautions the businesses and entrepreneurs from choosing people to go overseas using the same criteria they would use for domestic positions.

As a rule of thumb, before selecting anyone or self to take battle overseas, one should think about the country's valued traits and compare them with his/her own. If they're different, then one should honestly ask -- Are he/she/self willing to change, or can he/she/self change? The change includes not only adapting to valued traits and established among business fraternity in the international market; but also those traits which help you influence people who come from different cultures than you, The latter traits mean the ability to figure out quickly what people there care about, communicating with them accordingly, being an effective listener etc. Adaptation also means adapting to even those social norms and to a degree indulging in them; which are considered blasphemous in your home country, or in the market where you are already successful.

Synchronicity is mastering the Art Of Coincidence, Choice, And Unlocking Your Mind, Tells New Book
Synchronicity is mastering the Art Of Coincidence, Choice, And Unlocking Your Mind, Tells New Book by Dr. Kirby Surprise.

Synchronicity:The Art Of Coincidence, Choice, And Unlocking Your Mind by Dr. Kirby Surprise is an exploration into the world of Synchronicity.

What is Synchronicity?

Synchronicity is the convergence of inner worlds and outer worlds. Inner world can be called the subconscious and the outer one can be the Conscious one. In simple, it’s the art of creating happenings in your life, called Synchronicity Event or SE, which reflect: What you always wanted to materialize in your life in real world.

Although hard to define in words, a SE is about experiencing one’s own life: more fully within a predefined and familiar context. In simple, SE is practicing seeing things from the eyes of subconscious, without being affected by the reality interpreted by the conscious mind; so that whatever you make your subconscious brain perceive, your conscious brain acts or sees materializing in real.

Synchronicity: The Art of Coincidence, Choice, and Unlocking Your Mind

publisher: New Page Books, published: 2012-02-22

ASIN: 1601631839

EAN: 9781601631831

sales rank: 9353

price: $10.98 (new), $28.52 (used)

"Synchronicity is teeming with delightful and often compelling surprises about the nature of meaningful coincidences in contemporary life. The author's prose is playful, provocative, and profound. Though you may not agree with all of Professor Surprise's conclusions, this book should be required reading for anyone wanting to understand the magnificence and mystery of synchronicity."

--Gary E. Schwartz, PhD, professor of psychology and medicine, The University of Arizona, and author of The Sacred Promise

"An interesting mix of mythology, neuroscience, and common sense, this book takes a serious, but light-hearted look at the way synchronicity works and the degree to which it can be controlled. Going well beyond the ideas of Jung, synchronicity's discoverer, psychotherapist Surprise draws on anthropology, String Theory, and Walt Disney to make the case that our internal states do effect external events...."

--Anna Jedrziewski, New Age Retailer

The experience of meaningful coincidences is universal. They are reported by people of every culture, every belief system, and every time period. Synchronicity examines the evidence for the human influence on the meaningfulness of events, and the way the modern computational model of the mind predicts how we create meaning.

It demonstrates that these events, based on the activity of the mind, are caused by the person who perceives them.

In this fascinating work, you will:

  • Learn to use your amazing ability to create synchronistic events

  • Discover how your mind creates the reality you experience

  • Unlock your brain's vast resources of connectivity and creativity

  • Change from living as a separate being to living as a part of the unified whole

Synchronicity will show you how you already create events around you, and make you a conscious co-creator of your reality. Dr. Surprise describes the miracles of your brain's processes, merging the worlds of modern physics and ancient mysticism to reveal abilities you have always possessed, but which were not fully understood--until now.

Learn to make reality dance to the rhythms of your thoughts.

  • Synchronicity: The Art Of Coincidence, Choice, And Unlocking Your Mind is a thoughtful book which is aimed at explaining in a simple way, the dynamics of the present and thought processes associated with reaching higher states of being or contentment. ---------

New Book celebrates Alan Turing, creator of World's First Computers
Computers have come a long way: From the ones, which needed halls both to sit and perform kindergarten like calculations, the computers have now reached a stage where they can sit in our pendants. Not to say, a personal computer today is many times powerful than the most powerful computers of mid 1900s.

But all this progress should not make us forget the hard work of those bright minds who took the first steps in commuting.

To celebrate the centenary of Alan Turing’s birth and highlight the importance of his contribution to computing, BCS -- The Chartered Institute for IT, released today its latest book, Alan Turing and His Contemporaries: Building the world’s first computers.

Apple Loves its Product Packaging Boxes just like a Toddler, reveals new Book
A new Book, Inside Apple, reveals the secret systems, tactics and leadership strategies (also called as Apple's "cultish secrecy) that allowed Steve Jobs and his company to churn out hit after hit and inspire a cult-like following for its products.

If Apple is Silicon Valley's answer to Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory, then author Adam Lashinsky, Fortune writer, provides readers with a golden ticket to step inside. In this primer on leadership and innovation, the author will introduce readers to concepts like the "DRI" (Apple's practice of assigning a Directly Responsible Individual to every task) and the Top 100 (an annual ritual in which 100 up-and-coming executives are tapped a la Skull & Bones for a secret retreat with company founder Steve Jobs).

According to Apple Insider, a blog which is known for publishing and breaking unheard news about Apple, the book reveals the existence of a secret room at Apple, devoted solely to designing product packaging and what users experience when opening a new product. This packaging room is located in a walled-off section of the company's main marketing building, and according to the new book, is "so secure that those with access to it need to badge in and out."

And what employees inside this secret packaging room do? The book reveals that in the room, employees perform "the most mundane of tasks -- opening boxes." One of the packaging designers spent months in the room, just opening hundreds of iPod box prototypes, until he felt the same, as he had expected himself to.

[Tech24Hours says: Packaging Boxes have a special fascination for small boys. As a child, I used to be on cloud nine whenever I managed to get a box which had pointed corners and clean edges. The fact that for Apple, the inexpensive box merits as much attention as the high-margin electronic device inside, says for itself, why Apple experience begins right from unboxing an Apple Product. The act gives the same joy, as a toddler gets, while getting a useless carton from the home’s recycle Bin.]

The book also reveals that Steve Jobs had interest in a startup camera company before he died late last year. The Book reveals that just months before his death, Jobs met with the CEO of Lytro in Palo Alto, the maker of a new "light field camera" that creates "living" pictures. But, in its current form, Lytro's relatively large, tube-shaped camera, didn’t appeal to Jobs’ sense of aesthetics. Although, a deal never materialized between Apple and Lytro, Jobs did ask 32 year old Ng send him an e-mail outlining three things he wanted Lytro to do with Apple.

Notably, Lytro's technology gained considerable attention last October, at All Things D's AsiaD Conference, for its camera that lets users focus a picture after it has been captured.

The book, throws light on Apple’s ‘no free lunches provided to employees on the company's corporate headquarters after first-day orientation’ philosophy and on Apple personalities like iOS chief, Scott Forstall ("CEO-in-waiting, while the head of Internet software), Eddy Cue (seen as a "dealmaker" crucial to the company's negotiations with outside partners like content providers and wireless carriers).

Based on numerous interviews, the book offers exclusive new information about how Apple innovates, deals with its suppliers and is handling the transition into the Post Jobs Era. Lashinsky, a Senior Editor at Large for Fortune, knows the subject cold: In a 2008 cover story for the magazine entitled The Genius Behind Steve: Could Operations Whiz Tim Cook Run The Company Someday he predicted that Tim Cook, then an unknown, would eventually succeed Steve Jobs as CEO.

While Inside Apple is ostensibly a deep dive into one, unique company (and its ecosystem of suppliers, investors, employees and competitors), the lessons about Jobs, leadership, product design and marketing are universal. They should appeal to anyone hoping to bring some of that Apple magic to their own company, career, or creative endeavor.)

Harvard Majors’ new book makes hard core philosophical topics interesting to common Joe
Books on hard core philosophy are often read by those with discreet liking for those subjects.
But philosophical discourses can offer troves of actionable wisdom to humans; that’s why there’s always a need to force a philosophy book on the hands of those who run miles on the mere mention of the word ‘philosophy’.

Two Harvard Grads and Groucho admirers have done just that; they have written a philosophy book that even a staunchest of philosophy hater will find interesting.

    The Book:

Plato and a platypus walk into a bar … is an account of what tanspires between Plato and platypus. The book is a philosophical-comedic treatise on understanding philosophy through jokes. The way in which such confound topics are tackled by the Plato and the Platypus, could even confound Confucius – a way very philosophical and very funny; a manner never found in university philosophy courses. In short, in the book, the humour is actually intended.

    About the Authors:

Thomas Cathcart and Daniel Klein are clearly qualified to expound on their theories. Both have majored in philosophy at Harvard. Cathcart, ever in search of his soul and true knowledge, dropped in and out of divinity schools and worked with street gangs in Chicago.

Klein wrote jokes for comedians and set up stunts for Candid Camera on the TV.

The book takes the line of the authors’ philosophical grandfather, Groucho marx; and hence dedicated to him.

This New York Times bestseller is the hilarious philosophy course everyone wishes they’d had in school

Outrageously funny, Plato and a Platypus Walk into a Bar . . . has been a breakout bestseller ever since authors—and born vaudevillians—Thomas Cathcart and Daniel Klein did their schtick on NPR’s Weekend Edition. Lively, original, and powerfully informative, Plato and a Platypus Walk Into a Bar . . . is a not-so-reverent crash course through the great philosophical thinkers and traditions, from Existentialism (What do Hegel and Bette Midler have in common?) to Logic (Sherlock Holmes never deduced anything). Philosophy 101 for those who like to take the heavy stuff lightly, this is a joy to read—and finally, it all makes sense! ---------

New book explores College Drinking Beyond pathology
As students we always ‘heard/ and hear’ from the world (elders, friends etc.) that alcohol is Bad.

But still, hundreds of college students drink too much.

And even after too much drinking and partying, many among them still get best grades and later, best jobs. [another variant of this college drinking is -- Take Two Pegs and pull an all nighter to study].

So are the views held regarding Alcohol are too one sided?

Thomas Vander Ven, author of the book Getting Wasted: Why College Students Drink Too Much and Party So Hard, says that although binge-drinking and drinking culture has been examined before; the history of alcohol research is the history of pathology. That’s there’s too much focus on addiction, and the ways in which alcohol destroys lives and destroys families; and when the world starts talking about college drinking, then these long lists and inventories of alcohol harms collated all these years and decades, indoctrinate the world.

Although the author acknowledges the bad effects of drinking and the not so good consequences; he says that too much focus on the bad effects, made past researchers miss the other side. The other aspect of drinking in college is covered by Ven in his book. ---------
