Motorola Xoom Android Tablet Officially launched in India

Tablet manufacturers have already started spoiling the Indian tablet buyer. Yesterday Motorola officially launched the Xoom Android tablet in India; and Asus Eee Pad Tansformer is reportedly slated for an end July arrival.

Xoom buyers will have option to buy both the 3G and the Wi-Fi-only versions. Both come with Android Honeycomb, 32GB of on-board memory, a 10.1 inch multi-touch display, A-GPS, dual-core 1GHz processor, and two cameras (rear and front-facing).



How Xoom compares with Apple iPad 2:



Price: The Xoom 3G has a price tag of about 40,000 INR ($890), while the Xoom Wi-Fi has 32,000 INR ($700). Although no word is out on Indian pricing yet, it’s expected that an Indian will have to shell out rupees 20,000 for Wi-Fi 16GB version. ---------

Money Apple spends to create an iPad2

If yes then, courtesy iSuppli, Here is the cost-profit dissection for the Apple’s hot device, the iPad2.

According to iSuppli, who specializes in keeping regular bill of materials estimates for Apple products, to create the 32GB GSM iPad 2, Apple has to spend $326.60. The CDMA version is pegged at $323.25. Apple is selling the 32 GB GSM iPad2 for $599. The added money to care of intermediaries, operators and itself is $272.4 .

Notably, creating iPad2 is costing Apple more than the iPad1 or the original iPad. According to iSuppli, Components for the touch display on the new iPad 2 are estimated to cost Apple $127 for each device, an increase of more than $30 from the first-generation iPad. The reason for the increase comes in large part from manufacturing challenges that the touch screen makers have been experiencing since beginning high production. Production yields, though they have been improving, has been very low throughout 2010, and drove prices to be much higher than initially expected.

That apart, the new A5 processor in the iPad 2 is also estimated to cost 75 percent more than the A4 processor found in the first-generation iPad. The A5 currently costs a presumed $14 per unit. The other factors contributing to the manufacturing cost of iPad2 are: the use of more expensive glue to improve efficiency and performance in the bonding of the touch display, a thinner glass cover believed to be Gorilla glass, and a more detailed inspection process requiring additional equipment for optical and panel examination.


For the sake of comparison, iSuppli estimates that the Motorola Xoom, with equivalent 3G radio and 32GB of memory, is serving Motorola a total bill of materials cost of $359.92. Motorola will sell this Xoom for $799. Added Money, $439.08 .

Interestingly, another cost estimates firm UBM TechInsights, had estimated a much lower manufacturing cost for iPad2, at $270 for the 32GB 3G-capable model.

As a sort disclaimer, Apple advises investors and enthusiasts not to put too much credence to these third-party reports. ---------

New SwiftKey for HoneyComb to coincide with Xoom launch

Touchtype, the maker of one of Android’s favorite keyboards has announced that SwiftKey will be coming to Android Honeycomb tablets. The launch will coincide with the release of the Motorola Xoom, a HoneyComb or Android 3.0 tablet.

Features:

Keeping all that was great: 1) the easily programmable custom dictionary, 2) punctuation prediction, 3) and word prediction, which not only predicts the word that a usr is currently typing, but also logically predict the next word in the sentence; the company has added some extra features to adapt it to the tablet.

What is New:

The new version of SwiftKey ofr tablet will be have a more personal experience—like letting a user check his/her online profiles like — Gmail, Facebook, Twitter, blog, etc.

In addition, using Google’s advanced cloud-based technology, SwiftKey learns how a user writes and quickly tailors his/her typing experience. SwiftKey’s core prediction engine, Fluency 2.0, is integrated directly into the Honeycomb product allowing for a improved prediction technique that will integrate each aspect of the typing interface process (from the first two keys pressed to the prediction of sentences).

New SwiftKey is also multi-lingual, and can facilitate predictions in several different languages simultaneously, offering predictions in the most relevant language automatically, without the need of manual selection.

The new SwiftKey will have a new interface as well, where the keyboard is split into 3 sections, with numbers in the middle and letters on the right and left, for typing convenience (who said a keyboard layout needs to be QWERTY always).
