Look at $98 Apple iPad 2 Clone from China
Tablet makers in China have copied Apple’s iPad several times. But finally the first copy of Apple ipad 2 has come out in China as well. Named, Easydy E88, is an ipad clone (you can see yourself from the pictures here) and costs one fifth of the real thing. The clone costs just $98USD.

The clone’s styling is reminiscent of the iPad 2; but it lacks the aluminum back. In place of glossy aluminium this copycat has a glossy white plastic (you can’t get universe at that price).

Easydy E88

Manufactured by Easydy the tablet beats real Apple ipad 2 on one thing. There is a microSD memory card slot in Easydy E88, which Apple iPad 2 lacks. But this is not meant for beating Apple, the fact that E88 only comes with just 4GB of built-in storage, hence an extendable storage becomes a necessity rather than some putting down ploy.

But don’t blame E88 to have inferior specs than Apple’s iPad 2 almost everyway; for obvious reasons.

The E88 specs are -- a 9.7-inch (800 x 600 resolution) resistive touchscreen, an 800Hz VIA 8650 processor, 256MB of RAM, Android Froyo 2.2 OS, a 2800mAh battery, and support for external 3G. the tablet is thicker than Apple iPad 2.

There is oen more area, the E88 seems to beat Apple iPad 2 – its weight. E88 weighs less than the iPad 2 at 479g . But that again is because it’s not using metal (Aluminum :) ) ---------

Flipboard to reach 10 million users by early 2011
Things are going exceptionally good for iPad magazine application founder, Mike McCue.
Launched in July 2010, Flipboard has caught up a happy growth trajectory. According to Mr. McCue, also the chief executive of Flipboard, the company is on track to reach 10 million users early 2011.

This will be four folds of the number of users Flipboard currently has. Flipboard currently has around 2.5 million users, up from around 1.1 million users in January.

The CEO is also convinced that the startup’s business model has begun to take shape, will start booking positive cash flow later next year, reports Business Insider. Notably, the company which is quite favorite among its VCs, is not generating any revenue yet. Mr. Flipboard raised a $50 million in April this year, at a valuation of $200 million.

Right now, as a part of advertising trials, many of the 30 publications are showing magazine style ads (entire page ads apt for brand advertising) without charging the advertisers for the ad. But according to BI, later this summer, Flipboard will launch a formal advertising program that will allow publishers to begin selling ads. The ad revenue so received will be shared by Flipboard and the publishers. Details of which are not known.

Upbeat, the company plans to gradually expand to other mobile platforms, including Google’s Android system (possibly later this year), to even pull the growth trajectory further north. Another area where the company is working right now is to assit hundreds of publications inside and outside US to adapt their content for Flipboard app. In addition, the company which has around 35 employees now, plans to rasie the count to 55 or 60 by year end.

Interestingly, Flipboard released a new, faster version of its app in March, which may have contributed to the surge in popularity too. An iPhone version is expected later this summer. Another factor, which the ceo says augmented Flipboard’s recent growth, was the launch of Apple’s iPad2 in March this year. The app is now seeing about 400 million “flips” or pageviews per month, up from about 100 million flips in February. Again a 400 percent growth.

What is Flipboard: Flipboard is an ipad Application which lets users create their own digital magazines by selecting content from about 30 publications plus from top social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter. This user chosen content is presented in a magazine-like format – whose pages, populated with text, graphics and pictures from chosen sources, can be flipped to navigate. The user can share that content across social networks too.

A brief profile picture of Mike McCue: Mike, formerly Netscape’s vice president of technology, is a seasoned entrepreneur and engineer. After his NetScape days, Mike co-founded speech-recognition technology company Tellme Networks, which was bought by Microsoft in 2007 for about to $800 million. ---------

Tablet buyer wants ipad or something very similar
According to a survey by Bernstein Research, a tablet buyer wants Apple ipad or something very similar.

The survey found that when asked, which tablet they want? 50% of consumers said they want an iPad, and the rest want something that’s very similar to an iPad. Call it Apple effect, but respondents also gave an impression that ‘a device will be called a Tablet’ if it’s a display equals to that of Apple iPad. Which indirectly meant that the 7” tablet models recently launched, like the BlackBerry PlayBook, don’t stand well in the consumer perception. According to Mac Observer, it means that 7” tablets are destined for failure.

In addition, the survey found that in the US, Apple has more than double the brand appeal of BlackBerry, HTC, Motorola, Nokia and Samsung combined.

Below is an empirical view of consumer want in tablets, with above shared criteria somewhere lurking in the mind:

Apple____________50 percent
Dell_____________12 percent
RIM_____________9 percent
No Preference_____8 percent
Samsung_________7 percent
HP______________6 percent
HTC_____________4 percent
Nokia____________2 percent
Moto_____________2 percent ---------

Apple gets patent for additional connector slot design
Apple gets patent for additional connector slot design
The US department responsible for granting of patents has awarded an interesting patent to Apple. The said patent is for a design for an iPad with an additional connector slot on the side of the device.

Notably, Apple had applied for patent for the same design before (though not in a shipping product) with the Trade Marks and Designs Registration Office of the European Union early last year, which was made public in October. Both the designs the one awarded patent for and the one submitted to the European body are brought to world gaze by Patently Apple, and is addressed simply "portable display device. The patent application mentions Apple CEO Steve Jobs, Apple industrial design Chief Jonathan Ive, and 13 others as inventors.

Interestingly, both the first- and second-generation of Apple's iPad continue to have one 30-pin connector port on the bottom of the device only, matching the placement in the iPhone and iPod Touch -- making, even the latest iteration of tablet to dock with Apple's official dock with just one orientation. An additional connector slot on the side of the device side would have allowed additional orientation and could also open up the device to work with additional accessories that required the I/O. ---------

Number of Apple iOS device sales world-wide in year ending march 31 2011
Apple has sued the rival Samsung Electronics, claiming that it has copied the design of Apple’s key products iPhone and iPad.

Calling the act as blatant copying, the US tech giant's case, filed at a US court, focuses on the South Korean firm's line of Galaxy mobile phones and tablets.

Among things Apple is unhappy about include Samsung's design features, such as the look of its screen icons.

Over all Apple has brought 16 claims against Samsung which include unjust enrichment, trademark infringement and 10 other patent claims.

In the papers filed in court on Wednesday, Apple, gave a count of the iOS devices it has sold so far this year.

As of March 2011, Apple has sold more than 108 million iPhones worldwide.

That apart the company sold 60M iPod touch, and 19M iPads. Taking the total iOS devices sold, including the AppleTVs, to close to 200 million.

Looking deeper, in the most recent quarter, Jan-Mar 2011, Apple sold 18.1 million iPhones; and in the three quarters prior, 89.9 million iPhones. Taking the total to 108 million as of 31 march 2011.

The papers put iPod touch sales at 55.5 million, a difference of 4.5 million units.

iPad sales before Q1 were 14.7 million; which means that 4.2 million iPads were sold in the quarter ending March 31, 2011. Which is at least 2.8 million less than what Analysts have expected (they were vouching for 7 million units). ---------

Money Apple spends to create an iPad2
Do you have a different perspective at looking at new gadgets?

Like, How much the device costed to the maker, and what additional money has been added to the device before thrusting it on the hands of the final buyer, that’s You.

If yes then, courtesy iSuppli, Here is the cost-profit dissection for the Apple’s hot device, the iPad2.

According to iSuppli, who specializes in keeping regular bill of materials estimates for Apple products, to create the 32GB GSM iPad 2, Apple has to spend $326.60. The CDMA version is pegged at $323.25. Apple is selling the 32 GB GSM iPad2 for $599. The added money to care of intermediaries, operators and itself is $272.4 .

Notably, creating iPad2 is costing Apple more than the iPad1 or the original iPad. According to iSuppli, Components for the touch display on the new iPad 2 are estimated to cost Apple $127 for each device, an increase of more than $30 from the first-generation iPad. The reason for the increase comes in large part from manufacturing challenges that the touch screen makers have been experiencing since beginning high production. Production yields, though they have been improving, has been very low throughout 2010, and drove prices to be much higher than initially expected.

That apart, the new A5 processor in the iPad 2 is also estimated to cost 75 percent more than the A4 processor found in the first-generation iPad. The A5 currently costs a presumed $14 per unit. The other factors contributing to the manufacturing cost of iPad2 are: the use of more expensive glue to improve efficiency and performance in the bonding of the touch display, a thinner glass cover believed to be Gorilla glass, and a more detailed inspection process requiring additional equipment for optical and panel examination.

For the sake of comparison, iSuppli estimates that the Motorola Xoom, with equivalent 3G radio and 32GB of memory, is serving Motorola a total bill of materials cost of $359.92. Motorola will sell this Xoom for $799. Added Money, $439.08 .

Interestingly, another cost estimates firm UBM TechInsights, had estimated a much lower manufacturing cost for iPad2, at $270 for the 32GB 3G-capable model.

As a sort disclaimer, Apple advises investors and enthusiasts not to put too much credence to these third-party reports. ---------

Expect Apple iPad 2 India Launch soon
Launching the original iPad ten months after its US launch; and rolling out the next iteration just two months later in US; has definitely disappointed original iPad buyers in India. And they have every right to feel cheated for being treated as a dumping ground.

But things will be different with the iPad2. Although those Indians who have already bought the original iPad, will be spending the money the second time, to lay their hands on the iPad2.

According to a senior manager at a leading Apple partner in India, on informal enquiries, that the company is working on a launch date to be announced in just two weeks. This means that, although India is not featuring in the list of the other countries, that are going to have iPad2 on March 25, Apple may launch the iPad 2 in India in just about a couple of weeks, may be in April.

7 in 10 iPad2 buyers are buying Apple tablet for the first time

One of the strongest pitches of new Apple device launches is the stress on out of the world user experience the device provides. And there is a reason the company stresses on that – as most Apple products rolled out so far have a vast untapped markets, where Apple products are literally unheard of.

According to a new survey most of the people mobbing Apple stores to buy Apple’s iPad 2 this weekend did not own the earlier version of Apple’s tablet computer OR are the First Timers.

Seventy percent of the 236 iPad 2 buyer surveyed in New York and Minneapolis have never owned an iPad before. By contrast, 23% of iPhone 4 buyers surveyed at the handset’s launch had never owned one of Apple’s smart phones (as iphone’s have lost some of its novelty factor compared to iPad).

Apple orders Alibaba to remove iPad2 cases: Rumors
According to some stories, Listings for iPad 2 cases at Alibaba.com have reportedly been removed on a case by case basis (as and when someone reports the presence of some iPad2 case) by an unnamed company which everyone presumes to be Apple. While some examples of the cases ar removed some are still on line and waiting for removal.

According to a blog posting at the Wall Street Journal, AliBaba’s “Group Spokesman”, John Spelich, is quoted as saying: “We do not know whether these products are what they say they are, but we have received a legitimate takedown request and are removing the listings.”

Surfacing of iPad 2 cases, with slots and holes not required in the current iPad is a thought provoking development; as why will a manufacturer invest in some case design which is not made for current iPad.

On a close scrutiny most of these iPad2 cases are stated to be perfect fit for the current iPad; bringing in the inference that says may be someone wants to take advantage of the craze for the current and the next iteration of the popular tablet; but looking at the high aesthetic demands of iPad users, this inference doesn’t look viable. ---------
