Microsoft emulates Apple, goes for deeper ties with ARM

On Friday Microsoft announced a more deep licensing agreement with ARM, a chip maker from UK, who has a 13-year relationship with Microsoft. The license gives Microsoft access to ARM architecture instead of licensing products one by one.

Microsoft, whose Windows software runs nine in 10 of the world's PCs, traditionally designs its software around chip architecture from ARM rival Intel. But unlike Apple who has more access to ARM architecture (Apple was said to have designed the A4 chip in-house based on the ARM Cortex-A8 core), Microsoft’s previous agreement was limited in access. The A4 chip is in Apple's iPad tablet computer
and the iPhone 4 smartphone.

Some analysts also suggest Microsoft going the Apple way, designing its own ARM-based hardware for use in future devices. --------
