Samsung Exynos 4212 unveiled: A 1.5GHz dual-core processor for smartphones and tablets

Samsung today announced an update to its Exynos line of mobile processors.

The latest, Exynos 4212 dual-core processor , will be used in forthcoming smartphones and tablets, and boasts a significant processing power and 3D graphics improvements.

Here are the salient points of the the Exynos 4212 dual-core processor:

1) Based on the Cortex A9 chip, the Exynos 4212 dual-core processor will have an out-of-the-box clock speed of 1.5GHz.

2) It boosts the 3D graphics performance of devices by 50 per cent over the current chip.

3) Samsung will use a 32nm low-power High-K Metal Gate (HKMG) manufacturing process, making the chip 30 per cent more efficient than the previous generation.

4) It will also be able to support HD images, video recording and playback at 1080p.

5) Has an built-in on-chip HDMI 1.4 interface.

In addition, Samsung has announced the creation of a 16-megapixel CMOS image sensor with backside illumination technology (BSI) for improved image capture in low light conditions. The S5K2P1 is designed for use in high-end smartphones, digital cameras and camcorders. It supports the 16:9 video format natively as well as a 16-megapixel resolution when shooting at 30 frames per second and up to 8.3-megapixel resolution when shooting at 60 frames per second.

Notably, the Galaxy S II has a 1.2GHz dual core Exynos 4210 processor; the processor is capable of reaching the over-clocked speeds of 1.5GHz. This makes Exynos 4212 an interesting entrant. Over-clocking, in processing terminology, is a systematic attempt by both professional and amateurs to run a processor past the speed that it is rated at. Even a person with ordinary PC can experiment over-clocking the PC processor. But since running a processor at a higher frequency heats up the processor, so there’s always a risk of damaging the processor and the PC. The professionals and well informed amateurs, who over clock a processor do so in a controlled environment, plus their experience also tells them, to what extent a particular processor is over-clocked.

Availability: Samsung is expected to mass produce the sensor in November, and will provide samples of the Exynos 4212 chips to customers in Jan-Mar 2012. --------
