6 Gbps Speeds Offering Cable Modem -- Netgear CM1000

Netgear Launches CM1000 DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem, New Switches at CES 2017

Netgear has brought a DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem, named  CM1000 to the market. It is based on the Broadcom BCM3390 cable modem SoC announced at CES 2015.

What is DOCSIS 3.1?

It's one the most anticipated technology for cable modem industry. It allows ISPs to provide consumers with gigabit and higher speeds without altering existing cable infrastructure.

Speeds DOCSIS 3.1 Supports

The specifications support speeds up to 10 Gbps(1250 MBs). But the first generation chipsets like the BCM3390 support only speeds up to 6 Gbps means 750 MB data transfer per second. That's one an hour movie in a couple of seconds. This is not the accurate explanation, but just for the sake of understanding we can see what speeds it can sustain, that too using the existing infrastructure. Thus DOCSIS 3.1 is extending the speed barriers to the gigabit-tier services from the cable ISP. Note that the speeds depend on the equipment being used by the ISP in the area.
