It is quite annoying to see one's smartphone or other device battery draining out while it's not in use. Microsoft conducted a study, called Microsoft Sleep study, to look for the reasons responsible for this battery drain. And developed a new tool for Windows 8.1 (or Windows 8.x) , which tells you what has been draining the battery of a tablet or other battery-powered Windows device while it was not in use.

The Sleep Study tool keeps track of the apps and services responsible for running down your battery. This is a good thing, as even after ensuring authentic apps on your device or even after reading every disclosure, there are many apps which are simply power guzzlers. That too without you actually knowing. What makes Microsoft Sleep Tool worthy is that it's designed to have a minimal impact on the battery itself.

There are some requirements to using Sleep Study though. You need to have a Windows device that is compatible with a feature called InstantGo, which used to be known as Connected Standby. You also need to be familiar with Microsoft's command window and have Windows 8.1 installed. To implement , here is the detailed tutorial. It's for advanced tech enthusiasts though.

Siri Rivals are not new. But all this Siri rivaling tech is not that perfect. Microsoft's Cortnana may not become just another Siri Rival.

Siri, the voice Assistant in iOS6, may or may not be useful . Particularly when you belong to non-native English speakers and Siri finds it hard to understand what you have said. But the desire to have a Siri like utility on one's platform is hard to ignore. Post Siri, Samsung rolled out S-voice and Google's Android rolled own.

According to some leaks, reports circulating on the web and what Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said in July this year, Microsoft is developing its own Siri like voice assistant. Al character Cortana from the Halo series is to lend itself to a new Siri-rivaling tech from Microsoft.

The Cortana will have the “learn and adapt, relying on machine-learning technology and the ‘Satori’ knowledge repository powering Bing". Cortana is apparently intended to be a core feature in future versions of the Windows, Windows Phone and Xbox One operating systems. That apart the Cortana will have native support for all platforms , and will be great at responding seamlessly to what people ask for, and even anticipating what they need before they ask for it.

Cortana is not anticipated before 2014, and could even wait until 2016. Voice Assistant Tech is not perfect at present, Microsoft an wait that log, if it brings a perfectly obedient and properly listening slave. ---------

The Nokia Lumia 521 has been launched in US. The phone is a lower-priced smartphone. A low priced smartphone having Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 being launched in US is a unique event as the world's largest software company has so far focused on putting its Windows Phone software into expensive, high-end devices - chiefly from Nokia and HTC Corp. Nokia Lumia 521m Microsoft pitches is its attempt to to offer a very high quality device in the mainstream.

The new Nokia Lumia 521 will go on sale at Walmart later this month at an unsubsidized price under $150, relatively cheap for a new phone running up-to-date software without a long-term contract.

The Nokia Lumia 521 is a 4G phone (LTE), selling elsewhere as the Nokia 520.

The Nokia Lumia 521 is a mid-range phone with some high-end features, such as four-inch touch screen, five megapixel camera and high-definition video display.

7 inch display seems to be the new preferred size of Tablets. Apple also introduced the 7.9-inch iPad Mini last October. Google already has nexus 7 tablet. Microsoft’s Surface tablet is finally available for pre-order on the official Microsoft website.

The countries where the table will be available in the first launch phase are -- Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The Microsoft Surface tablet will begin shipping on 26 October.

Price of Microsoft Surface:

The 64GB version of Surface tablet with the black Touch Cover which also doubles up as as Keyboard will cost $699. The 32 GB version of Surface will come have a $599 price tag, it includes the Touch Cover as well. The lowest $499 version (32 GB) is without the Touch Cover. All these tablets support just the Wi-Fi.

Microsoft has not yet revealed whether future versions of the tablet will support 3G and 4G.

Specs of Microsoft Surface Tablet:

Sports a 10.6-inch display with 1366×768 resolution at 148 pixels per inch. Is powered with Nvidia Tegra 3 processor with 2GB RAM. The tablet is available at two storage sizes: 32GB and 64GB. The tablet comes pre-loaded with a beta version of Office 2013 Home and Student which will get an upgrade for the final version later 2012. There are two 720p HD cameras on the front and rear. Connectivity Options include: USB port, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi.

Availability: The Microsoft Surface Tablet will officially be released on 26 October. Those who preorder the tablet now, will get the tablet shipped on October 26.
