“With RapidDrive, we are providing a tool that creates an even closer link between cloud storage and the PC environment, which makes it easier to manage files,”

adding further,

“RapidDrive is an essential means of simplifying work processes, especially for customers who are regular users of RapidShare at work.”

RapidPro customers have access to RapidDrive at additional cost, and the software currently supports Windows only. Versions for other operating systems are also planned. The final release is expected to come at the start of September, after completion of the testing phase. RapidDrive Beta is available for downloading at the following link:

MasterCard introduces Wallet Services in Paypass
Mastercard has unveiled Wallet services for Paypass (its contactless payments service). The roll out is the company’s attempt to bundle together in-store NFC purchases, online purchases, and an API that will allow partners to create their own wallets using MasterCard’s infrastructure.

One of the salient features of the wallet is that, it not only store purchasing information, but shipping addresses as well.

Another important virtue of the wallet is that it is OPEN. That’s customers will be able to use other cards – like Visa, Amex, Discover – with the platform.

Ensuring that a customer has more places to use the wallet service, Mastercard has roped in Partners in the project, which include big names like American Airlines, Barnes and Noble, MLB, Citibank and The National Bank of Canada.

This is what Ed McLaughlin, chief emerging payments officer at MasterCard has to say about the Paypass Wallet Service,

“We realize that when it comes to payments, no single wallet will rule them all. PayPass Wallet Services simplifies the shopping experience while providing flexibility and choice to merchants, banks and consumers,”

With smart-device adoption fast exploding not only in developed countires (in US 50 percent population has access to smartphones), but also in developing countries (like India), the adoption of mobile payments in the future is becoming a foregone conclusion. By building a platform, rather than just a simple service, Mastercard might be able to capture a larger slice of the mobile payment market.

PayPass Wallet Services has three components, which aim at streamlining streamline a user’s shopping experience no matter where he/she shops:

1) PayPass Acceptance Network: Includes both online and contactless payments, and gives merchants a consistent way to accept electronics payments across multiple channels. NFC(Near Field connectivity) payments can be made in-store by simply tapping on them mobile device. A new PayPass online element lets a customer check out at a retailer by clicking a PayPass button — automatically providing your shipping and payment information to a retailer without having to fill that information out each time you pay.

2) PayPass Wallet: Enables banks, merchants and partners to white label their own wallets. Consumers can store payment and shipping information in one secure place including American Express, Discover, Visa and other branded credit, debit and prepaid cards.

3) PayPass API: Allows partners to connect their own wallets into the PayPass network, and lets those partners user MasterCard’s check-out, fraud detection and authentication services to allow their customers to make purchases wherever PayPass is accepted.

When will the MasterCard will the Mastercard Wallet Services for Paypass be available?

PayPass Wallet Services available to partners in the third quarter of 2012(October-December 2012), initially in the U.S., Canada, U.K. and Australia later including other countries.

Google 'Hotel Finder' launched
After purchasing a leading flight software company earlier this year, Google has launched a new tool for finding hotels.

Called the Hotel Finder, the tools is an "experimental search tool" designed to help users locate and book hotels.

Hotel Finder, which is restricted to the United States for now, lets a user refine their choice by geographic area using Google Maps and select hotels using various criteria including price, the number of stars and user ratings. The tool also allows users to create a "shortlist" of options before deciding to book a hotel directly or through online companies such as Priceline, Travelocity, Expedia or Hotels.com.

In recent times, Google has focused its attention to the travel sector -- the lucrative online travel market. In April this year, Google acquired flight data company ITA Software, for $700 million. The acquisitions was opposed by online travel companies like Travelocity, fearing unfair competition; but US justice department finally gave approval to the acquisition, by placing several restrictions on the search giant, one among them was Google notably agreeing to let ITA customers extend their contracts into 2016. ---------

WSJ launches WikiLeaks inspired SafeHouse
With a desire to Cash on the popularity of WikiLeaks, a site which came to limelight since its release of private international cables and the ongoing legal issues surrounding its former leader Julian Assange; The Wall Street Journal has launched SafeHouse, which encourages readers to share information concerning “fraud, abuse, pollution, insider trading, and other harms” in an anonymous manner.

The service will be using a secure upload system that will encrypt its contents and keep tipsters anonymous. According to WSJ, the site is for those who have newsworthy contracts, correspondence, e-mails, financial records or databases from companies, government agencies or non-profits; which they want the world to know about OR press the right authorities to act on. The publication underlines that the site is hosted on secure servers managed for its own editors.

Though, WSJ assures that the identity of the tipster will be kept anonymous, but if a tipster chooses to reveal his/her name, then it’ll help the editors.

It’s not surprising that a publication like WSJ has started a WikiLeaks inspired service. Since the WikiLeaks shut down after Cablegate and its existence on mirror sites since then; the world was toying with an idea of a site which is more effective but is also more reliable than WL. Notably, The New York Times has also been toying with the idea of launching its own WikiLeaks-type service to aid whistle-blowers.

It’s expected that Wall Street Journal will not be publishing any tip, just on the criterion of how sensational it is. The service will be censoring, via in-house editors, most tips before pressing the publish button. Thus SafeHouse, can be seen as another citizen journalist or whistle-blower initiative, where the publication is collating newsworthy reports from the ordinary and influential people alike.

Talking of competition, SafeHouse will have a few competitors too.

First, are a number of WikiLeaks mirror sites and publications which are supporting WikiLeaks in its efforts. Second is the OpenLeaks, founded by former WikiLeaks spokesman Daniel Domscheit-Berg, who decided to jump ship with the former site, as a result of Assange’s tightening grip over the organization. Third can be the one from The New York Times. ---------

Pushnote: A controversial web commenting service and how does it work?
Pushnote, a new web commenting service is trying to build a global commenting community; if that happens then it’s sure to rattle some feathers.

What is Pushnote:

Pushnote is a browser add-on tool which allows users to leave comments on any site that they visit, without needing to log in.

How it can be controversial, if it succeeds in its plans -- to build a global commenting community:

As websites will not be able to remove or censor any comments posted onto their sites via Pushnote (So twitter like malice towards brands and people can unroll on the website’s own courtyard).

How to use Pushnote:

Simple visit Pushnote, sign up and download the add-on for the browser you use (currently supported by Google Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer); will be installed like any other browser addon. The Pushnote button will then appear in your browser bar (at top right in chrome). Click the button to launch the Pushnote pop-up, and leave comments on any site on the web. The Pushnote button turns green when you visit a page where people have left comments. It turns red to alert you to new comments from friends (web-wide), so things can be shared and discussed in real-time.

To incorporate the social networking aspect, just as twitter one can follow friends who've signed up, and other Pushnote users. One can also cross-post his/her Pushnotes to his/her Twitter and Facebook accounts.

*** It’s to be seen, up to where the service can propel it. ---------
