Sexual predators excessively abundant in social networking sites
According to a Reuters news, the online networking site MySpace has identified and stopped 90,000 registered sex offenders from using its site in a period of last two years.

How Myspace identified the sex offenders:

Two years back Myspace appointed a background verification firm Sentinel Safe Tech Holdings Corp. to create a national database of sex offenders.

Sentinal operates a U.S. database of sex offenders that includes up to 120 identification details like name, address, scar marks, tattoos etc for each offender.

So the will of Myspace and the advanced technology of Sentinal helped in identifying and kicking out the sex offenders.

In addition, the Government ensured that Myspace remain answerable to the public. To achieve this it made Myspace to testify before a court on this matter. Previously in the absence of Govt activism, MySpace had acknowledged only 40,000 sex offenders on its network.

Not only this, the Govt will also confirm that Myspace has actually removed the said sex offenders from its site. The Govt has ordered Facebook, another social networking site to testify before a court on this issue too.

So, Myspace's will + Sentinal's technology + Govt activism helped nail the offenders.

Don't brush it aside as a trivial matter:

The danger aggravates more when one considers the fact that many minors do use social networking sites. So presence of sex offenders is real threat.

MySpace is owned by News Corp.

50% of people will be using mobile banking by 2013
According to a research, about 50% of people (people with bank accounts) will be managing their money through mobiles within the next five years.

The number will increase to 75% by 2020.

Other findings of the study:

--Mobile banking will surpass internet banking within five years. As mobile banking take-up rate (the rate at which people adopt a service or product) is quite higher than that of -- Online banking.

Factors which are assisting mobile banking:

--Current Economic downturn: As people want to have a closer look at their finances at times of downturn. With mobile banking they can monitor their accounts many times a day.

--Ease of use: Getting updates and sending queries is easy.

Factors which go against the growth of mobile banking:

--When the people’s trust in financial institutions is at a low, removing human intervention (which mobile banking does) hinders its adoption rate.

--People are still not comfortable in using mobiles for significant financial deals/transactions through a mobile (computer is still considered a more secure medium).

--Mobiles are loss- prone (are lost quite easily), strengthening the people perception that mobiles are less secure than the computer.

Google Search and Google Alerts helped Scott Adams-- the creator of Dilbert
Do you know Dilbert?... You surely will be knowing him.

He is the main character of a comic strip with eponymous name, which is set in a modern day office. The creator of Dilbert is Scott Adams, who created Dilbert—the cubicle-dwelling office worker in 1989. Dilbert is famous the world over, so is its creator.

A few years after creating Dilbert, Scott Adams contracted involuntary muscle spasms(having neurological origin)in his drawing hand. Doctors diagnosed it as focal dystonia, more commonly known as severe writer’s cramp; brought on by overuse of the hand. Instead of providing him a cure, the doctors suggested him to stop drawing and move on to a different profession. He started drawing with his left hand and tried to recover. One day, all of a sudden, his hand got back full function.
The problem resurfaced after ten years. This time he managed to control the problem. But in the spring of 2005, after some usual seasonal asthma and allergy, he lost his voice. The ENT specialists found nothing abnormal with the structure, but couldn’t nail down the possible cause.

For six months of living a life of gloom, Scott suddenly started wondering if his speech problem might have some connection with his hand.

At this stage he included Web technology in the scheme of things.

He coupled Voice with dystonia and typed “voice dystonia” into Google. He found a link to a video of a person. In no time, he concluded that, the person and he are suffering from the same disorder. That day he gathered valuable information by following some connecting links.

After a year of putting technology to his aid, he started using Google Alerts. He chose three keywords -- Dilbert, his name and spasmodic dysphonia. And whenever someone mentioned any of these keywords on the internet, he got an alert. Six months back he got an alert which told him of some obscure surgical procedure for fixing spasmodic dysphonia, developed in Japan. Although he didn’t go to Japan to get the surgery done, instead he told his doctor about the procedure cure he had read, and his doctor referred him to an expert at Stanford University, who in turn, performed a different kind of surgery. Within four months of the surgery, Scott’s voice was back to normal.

Scott Adams says Google search and Google Alerts helped him get back his voice.
