Sexual predators excessively abundant in social networking sites

According to a Reuters news, the online networking site MySpace has identified and stopped 90,000 registered sex offenders from using its site in a period of last two years.

How Myspace identified the sex offenders:

Two years back Myspace appointed a background verification firm Sentinel Safe Tech Holdings Corp. to create a national database of sex offenders.

Sentinal operates a U.S. database of sex offenders that includes up to 120 identification details like name, address, scar marks, tattoos etc for each offender.

So the will of Myspace and the advanced technology of Sentinal helped in identifying and kicking out the sex offenders.

In addition, the Government ensured that Myspace remain answerable to the public. To achieve this it made Myspace to testify before a court on this matter. Previously in the absence of Govt activism, MySpace had acknowledged only 40,000 sex offenders on its network.

Not only this, the Govt will also confirm that Myspace has actually removed the said sex offenders from its site. The Govt has ordered Facebook, another social networking site to testify before a court on this issue too.

So, Myspace's will + Sentinal's technology + Govt activism helped nail the offenders.

Don't brush it aside as a trivial matter:

The danger aggravates more when one considers the fact that many minors do use social networking sites. So presence of sex offenders is real threat.
