The US department responsible for granting of patents has awarded an interesting patent to Apple. The said patent is for a design for an iPad with an additional connector slot on the side of the device.
Notably, Apple had applied for patent for the same design before (though not in a shipping product) with the Trade Marks and Designs Registration Office of the European Union early last year, which was made public in October. Both the designs the one awarded patent for and the one submitted to the European body are brought to world gaze by Patently Apple, and is addressed simply "portable display device. The patent application mentions Apple CEO Steve Jobs, Apple industrial design Chief Jonathan Ive, and 13 others as inventors.
Interestingly, both the first- and second-generation of Apple's iPad continue to have one 30-pin connector port on the bottom of the device only, matching the placement in the iPhone and iPod Touch -- making, even the latest iteration of tablet to dock with Apple's official dock with just one orientation. An additional connector slot on the side of the device side would have allowed additional orientation and could also open up the device to work with additional accessories that required the I/O.
