According to latest preliminary forecast by Gartner,

The worldwide PC spending is expected to reach $245 billion in 2010, up 12.2 percent from 2009.
This forecast is more optimistic than Gartner's December 2009 forecast, which anticipated 1.9 percent growth in spending.

Gartner's December 2009 forecast for world-wide PC shipments was also quite pessimistic compared to the latest forecast. In Dec 2009 forecast, Gartner had forecast a 13.3 percent growth in PC shipments in 2010 ---------

Worldwide PC shipments are projected to total 366.1 million units in 2010. This will be about 20 percent more than the total shipments in 2009. In 2009, theworld-wide PC shipments were 305.8 million units. ---------

According to Morgan Stanley’s The Mobile Internet Report December 2009,

the mobile web will eventually be at least twice the size of Desktop Internet.

The firm attributes this to the increasing popularity of smartphones driven by 3G adoption.

In addition, the report predicts that:

-- Smartphones will out-ship the global notebook + netbook market in 2010.

-- Smartphones will out-ship the global PC market (notebook + netbook + desktop) by 2012.

Other predictions:

-- Apple's iPhone/iTouch/iTunes ecosystem may prove to be the fastest threatening and most disruptive technology product / service launch ever. (May be because the products encourage users to demand high bandwidth ).A very small players like Apple, Google, Amazon.com and Skype appear to be especially well positioned for mobile changes. ---------

According to Taiwan's Acer Inc, the world's No.2 PC maker, Microsoft Corp's Windows 7 operating system launch last month, will show positively on year-end PC sales, though the gains were within expectations.

The company is keeping its quarterly revenue outlook and maintaining a 15 percent sales growth target for next year.

The company expects 50 percent growth in the global netbook market to 42 million units in 2010.

Sales in October-December quarter are to stay flat sequentially and rise 25 percent Year on Year (Compared to the Oct-Dec quarter 2008).

Acer had reported net profit of $108 million last month, for Jul-Sep quarter, up 14 percent from a year earlier. ---------
