RIM TV under development to rival Apple TV?
RIM TV under development to rival Apple TV?
According to some reports, Research In Motion (RIM), the makers of the Blackberry devices, is creating a media box to rival Apple TV.

Rumors are that the device would be a mixture of a basic BlackBerry Presenter and a media hub along the lines of the Apple device – featuring the same hardware as a Blackberry mobile device, that’s the same type of processor, while operating on a QNX-based OS (already supporting WiFi file sharing the system could already be on it’s way to quick integration, allowing business presentations and other office based programs to be synced up and shared more quickly), the same one used in the BlackBerry PlayBook.

But some other reports further add that the device will more likely not be a home-based device, but instead bring third-party media services to the game, much like the Apple AirPlay.

Rumors are that the device could ship by late 2011, around Christmas. ---------

A Leaked document suggests Motorola Xoom to launch on February 17
According to a newly leaked best Buy document, Motorola is up for a February 17 launch in US.

Talking of the price of the upcoming Motorola tablet, the same source who leaked the launch date has found a different price (not $800). The unnamed source says that the price point will be $699.99. A possibility of the $700 being the price after subsidy; and the $800 price unsubsidized.

The launch date the Best Buy document suggests can be true as Motorola has previously said the 3G version of the Xoom will launch "sometime in Q1 2011 (Jan-Feb 2011). The 4G version will arrive in Q2, and the 3G model will be upgradeable, though exactly how is not clear. One more thing which points to the February 17 launch is the normal Verizon strategy of Thursday launches.

Motorola Xoom is hailed as the true Apple iPad competitor; but the price can be an issue. As the wi-fi only iPad has a much lower price tag of $499. Add to this the huge app ecosystem Apple’s tablet has. But the $500 iPad has only 16GB of storage. In comparison, the Motorola Xoom, a HoneyComb or Android 3.0 tablet, has 3G, as well, will be upgradeable to 4G, has NVIDIA's dual-core Tegra 2, as well as 32GB of storage (reportedly).

The video below shows the Evolution of tablets, by motorola. The emphasis is on HoneyComb or Android 3.0, an android os specially designed for tablets:

Below is the hands-on experience of Motorola Xoom:

A Korean music video gives substance to LG G-Slate 3D rumors
Recent rumors about LG’s upcoming G-Slate tablet suggest that tablet would have a 3D display (no glasses required) and a 3D camera.

The rumors may indeed have substance to them, as it tuns out that a tablet with LG branding has shown up in a Korean pop music video and the device appears to have two cameras on the back which lends with certaintly some credence to the idea of a 3D camera.

Although, the appearance of a tablet with an LG logo doesn’t point to anything, if one wants to look at it that way. But the LG tablet’s appearance in the video certainly looks like product placement, with the logo displayed quite prominently and for no apparent reason. In addition the characters inside the tablet looked very 3D.

Motorola Xoom gets its First Price Tag
Motorola Xoom, the tablet viewed as promising by many in the just concluded CES2011, has got its first price tag (speculative).According to a Android Community story, UK site Handtec has the tablet available for pre-order -- but it is still in two minds on the price it should sell Xoom. That report shows the price as £660 (USD 1025), but it's now zoomed up to £720 (USD 1120).

The site reveals that the tablet is "due in soon".

Specs: With a 10.1-inch touchscreen, Xoom is one of the first to run Android 3.0 Honeycomb.

Honeycomb is fronted by a new interface that's more suited to a tablet's large screen than previous Androids, which were designed for small-screened smart phones. Notable features include drag and drop app groups. Apps, ebooks, YouTube videos and other bits of media are displayed in a nifty carousel that looks like it's rotating in 3D. The redesigned browser boasts tabbed browsing and Flash video support.

Xoom has a dual-core processor, 3G, 802.11n Wi-Fi, two USB ports, an SD card, HDMI and 32GB of storage. It has a 2-megapixel camera for video calling and 5-megapixel camera for taking pictures and shooting video, with two LED photo lights. ---------

Apple orders Alibaba to remove iPad2 cases: Rumors
According to some stories, Listings for iPad 2 cases at Alibaba.com have reportedly been removed on a case by case basis (as and when someone reports the presence of some iPad2 case) by an unnamed company which everyone presumes to be Apple. While some examples of the cases ar removed some are still on line and waiting for removal.

According to a blog posting at the Wall Street Journal, AliBaba’s “Group Spokesman”, John Spelich, is quoted as saying: “We do not know whether these products are what they say they are, but we have received a legitimate takedown request and are removing the listings.”

Surfacing of iPad 2 cases, with slots and holes not required in the current iPad is a thought provoking development; as why will a manufacturer invest in some case design which is not made for current iPad.

On a close scrutiny most of these iPad2 cases are stated to be perfect fit for the current iPad; bringing in the inference that says may be someone wants to take advantage of the craze for the current and the next iteration of the popular tablet; but looking at the high aesthetic demands of iPad users, this inference doesn’t look viable. ---------

Samsung going to debut an Apple iPod touch like device at upcoming CES: Rumors
After bringing Galaxy S and Galaxy Tablet to rival Apple’s iPhone and iPad respectively; rumors suggest Samsung is developing an iPod touch challenger, set to debut at the upcoming CES 2011.

Call it an iPod touch nemesis?

Although Samsung Galaxy products have never actually gave a formidable challenge to their Apple counterparts in terms of sales or success, but when compared to others they’ve still done remarkably well.

This story expcts the Samsung media player to pack a super clear 4 inch LCD touch screen (no super AMOLED apparently), a 1GHz processor, one 3.2 MP rear camera and a front VGA one, plus microSD card capability; with same storage as Galaxy S, of 8GB, 16GB and 32GB. Other features include the basic WiFi, Bluetooth, HD video playback and of course the Android OS. However, it will only be shipping with Android 2.2, not Gingerbread unfortunately.

What the rumors circulating are like:

Samsung is reportedly set to unveil the Galaxy Player device (model name YP-GB1) in Las Vegas at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show, 6-9 January 2011. Basically, the portable media player will be like a Samsung Galaxy S, but without the phoning (just like an iPod touch is an iPhone without the phone part). From the shots we’ve seen it looks more or less identical and also has the same super thin 9.9 mm thickness.

** It’s to be seen what Samsung accomplishes with the Samsung Galaxy MP4 player and Apple iPod touch rival set to debut in the new year. It should be noted that when Apple launched iPod at first, it was a revolutionary or curve jumping product; so it’s to be seen how Samsung will differentiate its offering. The areas it can improve will be sound quality. Ecosystem-wise here is not much scope. ---------

Skype to bring video chat to Apple devices in 2011: Speculation
According to rumors Skype plans to unveil its own video-chat feature for its mobile apps at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in January.

Pcworld bases its speculation on a FAQ page published on the Skype site (it's since been removed), which said -- video calls on a device like Apple's iPhone could transpire over both a user's 3G and Wi-Fi connections—that's actually an upgrade from FaceTime, which only officially works across one's Wi-Fi connection.

Additionally, the new version of Skype supporting video chat would only work on iOS 4.0 or higher, as well as an iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, a third- or fourth-generation iPod Touch, or an iPad. Mobile users would also be able to receive screen-sharing from desktop or laptop Skype users. ---------
