Google acquires Twitter's mobile app developer platform Fabric
A couple of months ago, there was some talk of Twitter acquisition. Who would be the ideal suitor? was the question. From some superficial thinking it came to us that Google could be the ideal buyer.

Google acquires Twitter mobile app developer platform Fabric
Ten days ago Google acquired Twitter's mobile app developer platform Fabric. According to reports, Google bought Fabric in a bid to help developers build better apps and grow their business. Fabric started as a modular SDK in 2014 allowing developers improve their apps. On the acquisition Google said, "The integration of Fabric is part of our larger, long-term effort of delivering a comprehensive suite of features for iOS, Android and mobile web app development,"says Google.

Fabric at present serves apps built by 580,000 developers. These apps are used by 2.5 billion users.

Fabric will join Google's Developer Product Group working with Firebase team.

Seems as if Twitter is acquired in bits and pieces.

Flippa gains Bulk by buying John Ferber's Company

Have you ever tried to sell a website or domain name on Flippa?

Chances are you may have not OR if you had then with no success.

I'm telling you this, as Flippa.com, a popular marketplace for buying and selling websites, domains, and apps, has remained very choosy when it comes to helping you sell your domain. Unless, you have a website which really earns big money or a domain name which has real value (in terms of the value of the name itself), then there are slim chances hat you will benefit from the Flippa marketplace.

But however choosy Flippa may have been, it's growing leaps and bounds;and testimony to this fact is , Flippa has acquired premium domain name brokerage company, Domain Holdings Group, for an undisclosed price.

According to Flippa's Founder Mark Harbottle, the combined entities (Flippa + Domain Holdings Group) are projected to make up $70 million in sales over the next 12 months. A claim DomainHoldings' Co-Founder John Ferber, agrees with. This number puts Flippa in the league of giants such as Sedo and GoDaddy. As far as Domain Holdings is concerned, it raked in $31 million in sales last year.

Serial Entrepreneurs achieve different objectives with this acquisition

Both Mark Harbottle and John Ferber are serial entrepreneurs. What a serial entrepreneur is? An entrepreneur who continuously comes up with new ideas and starts new businesses.

Both Harbottle and Ferber want to achieve different objectives with this acquisition.

Harbottle, who also founded 99Designs.com, wants to grow big as a broker of online properties and apps.

Ferber who is known for founding and selling Advertising.com to America Online for nearly $500 million in 2004; and later on joining hands with Chad Folkening to launch Domain Holdings in 2010, Ferber along with Folkening founded, native adertising company Bidtellect in 2011. Twitter Data Analytics enhanced with Gnip Aquisition

Twitter acquires Data Analytics firm Gnip. What Gnip's acquisition means to Marketers , Bloggers and Businesses.

Twitter has bought the data analytics company Gnip. The Colorado, USA based Gnip analyzes tweets to offer valuable insights on various metrics to the advertisers or other customers (bloggers, online marketers and marketers).

How Big is Gnip ?

Gnip analyses more than 500 million tweets its users publish, analyzes them ; and then offers the derived and inferred information in the palatable forms such as trends , insights projections etcs.

On the acquisition , Jana Messerschmidt, vice president of Twitter's Global Business Development & Platform, said,

"We want to make our data even more accessible, and the best way to do that is to work directly with our customers to get a better understanding of their needs,"
On the acquisition, the Colorado-based Gnip's CEO Chris Moody said,

"the deal will allow the company to provide broader, more deeper social data. This acquisition signals clear recognition that investments in social data are healthier than ever,"
What Gnip's acquisition means to Marketers , Bloggers and Businesses ?

Just like Facebook, Twitter is also drawing a line between its Free users and its Paying users. Paying users are those users who are paying for Sponsored Tweets or Post Boosts, Ads (in the case of Facebook). The acquisition of Gnip means that the Twitter analytics , the social network is offering to its paying users will become more insightful. The segregation may look partial to Free users; but this is how Twitter and Facebook can earn money. After all, Free users are using these social networks as consumers of a free service. That's why it's alright if they don't get analytical insights. Call it an irony, those companies which depend on User Generated Content (such as Facebook and Twitter) for their growth , have to keep cutting free services to their Free users. ---------

Burstly, App Management Company acquired by Apple
Tech giant Apple may have hoarded truckloads of money with its curve jumping products; but the Cupertino based company is often seen as a miser when it comes to acquisitions. Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) philosophy towards acquisitions up to now is simple: If it feels the need to acquire a specific technology to augment or create a certain product or a service, it buys a brilliant small company.

Hence any news of Apple acquiring a company is interesting for two reasons: one, it's an interesting news as Apple has gone for an acquisition; and two, because if Apple acquires a company it indicates two things -- 1) The company acquired is something to look out for 2) and the acquisition itself tells what Apple thinks will be vital technology in future.

Apple has started the 2014 with an acquisition. Apple has recently acquired Burstly.

Burstly, is the company behind the mobile app testing platform TestFlight and mobile app monetization platform SkyRocket. Burstly is also behind nascent mobile app analytics platform, FlightPath. But the company has decided to shut it down. May be After Apple told then that it's acquiring Burstly.

How Apple will be using Burstly?

Although everything Burstly stands for is in line with Apple's current offerings : Apps, App Ecosystem and mobiles, still in more sure terms, Apple can perfect its current app review process by utilizing Burstly’s various platforms. That apart,  Burstly also has a software development kit (SDK) which it discontinued recently. That too is something Apple will be interested in.

Apple's recent Acquisitions... Do they give an insight into the future of Technology?

  • SnappyLabs, the company behind the popular SnappyCam iPhone camera app.
  • PrimeSense, d the Israel-based 3D vision and motion-sensing technology company.
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS), to improve  Apple's own Apple Maps app.
  • BroadMap, a Date Company
  • Loationary, a location data company.
  • HopStop, mass transit navigation app company.

TechCrunch also noted that Burstly had recently shut down its nascent mobile app analytics platform, FlightPath. The FlightPath address now redirects to the TestFlight website.

New CEO Tim Cook is picking up on Acquisitions

Apple showed an unusual appetite for acquisitions (going by its own past record on acquisitions) in 2013. A total of 15 acquisitions in 2013. The pace continued in 2014 as well. In the first quarter of fiscal 2014, Apple shelled out $525 million for business acquisitions during the quarter ending in December, nearly double what it spent in the year-ago quarter. ---------

CNN busy in Mashable acquisition Talks: Once again proves, blogs can become Big
If you always suspected the potential of blogging as a profession; OR doubted ‘any blog started by a single guy’ reach valuations worth millions; then after Huffington post, which AOL acquired last year for big money, it’s now Mashable’s turn to get acquired.

According to a source close to the deliberations, CNN is in talks to buy social media news site Mashable for more than $200 million. The deal could be finalized as soon as tomorrow.

Mashable (Mashable Inc.) is an American news website and Internet news blog founded by Pete Cashmore. The website's primary focus is social media news, but also covers news and developments in mobile, entertainment, online video, business, web development, technology, memes and gadgets. Mashable was launched by Pete Cashmore from his home in Aberdeen, Scotland in July 2005; has come a long way, and is regarded as one of the best business blogs online.

Like other mainstream news outlets CNN, which is owned by Time Warner Inc, has been trying to evolve its business to compete more effectively in the Web-based social media age. Last August CNN bought Zite, a news application for the iPad, designed to give users a personalized magazine-like experience.

Twitter Acquires Three year old security startup Dasient
Twitter Acquires Three year old security startup Dasient

In a talk at the DLD conference in Munich, Twitter co-founder and executive chairman Jack Dorsey clearly defined what Twitter means to them, the Twitter people, and how they see Twitter as a service. Twitter appears to be clearly working towards the direction Dorsey thinks it should.

One more area Twitter is focusing of late is its security; with Twitter having the distinction of being available at nearly every networked device existing today; its focus on beefing up security on its site, is understandable.

On Monday, Twitter acquired Dasient, a three-year-old Internet security start-up. This acquisition, is Twitter’s second security acquisition in just three months. In November 2011, just two months ago, it acquired Whisper Systems, a security service for mobile devices.

Terms for both deals were not disclosed.

Why the latest acquisition:

Twitter, the microblogging service, had issues with trending topic scams and spams for long. Since ‘following’ on Twitter, both qualitatively and quantitatively, matters a lot; hence influential and very popular Twitter accounts, mostly belonging to celebrities are a frequent target for high-profile hacks.

Only last month, Lady Gaga’s Twitter account with 18 million Twitter followers, was compromised. In 2010, Twitter was the subject of an inquiry by the Federal Trade Commission into its security practices after the Twitter accounts of Facebook, Fox News, President Obama and several other prominent users were found to be compromised.

Dasient can be of much help to Twitter, as its scanning software helps businesses identify and contain malware on the Web. That apart, Dasient also markets what it calls “the industry’s first anti-malvertising service,” which claims to protect advertising networks and publishers from malware. The acquisition is being seen as the next logical step of Twitter towards increasing its monetization efforts with self-service ads.

From Dasient’s perspective, the startup, sees the acquisition as an opportunity to apply its technology and team, to the world’s largest real-time information network.

About Dasient:

Dasient, a three year old company, co-founded in late 2008 by two ex-Googlers, Neil Daswani and Shariq Rizvi, and Ameet Ranadive, formerly of McKinsey & Company, with $4 million in seed money from Google Ventures, Floodgate, Radar Partners and Benhamou Global Ventures. In 2010, the company brought to its ship, as its chief executive, Paul Stich, a former vice president at McAfee. ---------

Facebook buys Gowalla
Facebook has bought Gowalla, based in Austin, Texas. But neither Companies have confirmed the acquisition yet.

Gowalla, which came to existence a few years ago as a social location sharing service; but courtesy the threat from Foursquare, more recently remodeled itself as a travel guide. Gowlla CEO is Josh Williams.

According to sources clso to Gowalla, a sizable part of Gowalla’s 30 member team will move to Facebook Headquarters at Palo Alto, Calif; where it will work on Facebook's ambitious new Timeline redesign, which Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled in September and is being rolled out to the social networking site's 800 million members.

Gowalla's vision is about people telling stories (Gowalla recently started refocusing from location sharing to helping travelers share their experiences with others; with the company already in the process of creating more than 60 Guides to cities around the world, authored by major content creators as well as by users themselves), and Facebook's vision for Timeline is about stories about important moments in life. This may be deal maker between the two.

No word is out on the money involved in the acquisition yet.

Gowalla till now, has raised about $10 million in funding from venture capital firms and angel investors. ---------

Any further Facebook acquisitions this year will be focusing on designers (better design will mean more user growth, retention and engagement, believes Facebook). But since Google is still not Google, money wise, hence Facebook will probably be going after smaller companies in the coming months. ---------

Google buys DealMap a 15 month old Deal Startup
There has been speculation for last few days that Google is going to acquire a discount deal startup named The DealMap.

The Menlo Park startup, on Monday, put an end to the speculation, by telling the world that they are thrilled to be acquired by Google. There’s no word on regarding the actual financial details of the deal, from any of the parties though.

With the acquisition of DealMap, Google’s acquisition tally in the last two years, crosses 70 companies, covering a wide range of technologies and skills.

A bit about DealMap and what it means to be acquired by Google:

The DealMap is a 15-month old company. A rather late entrant to the deal market place dominated by other local deals/ deal-of-the-day sites, like GroupOn, the start-up managed to grow quickly to serve over 2 million users with its website and mobile apps.

In the blogpost, DealMap underlines that it believes Google provides the ideal platform to help them accelerate their growth and fulfill their mission. Google, they believe, will help them innovate in new and unexplored areas of commerce.

Google sees the buy as, picking the right property at its infancy, a step which will benefit its commerce offerings, with DealMap helping it build even better products and services for consumers and merchants.

Why Deal Marketplace so Hot of late:

There are a few reasons to it. With the meteoric rise of social networking in recent years, local bargain has crossed the boundaries of individual bargain and geography (people can get group bargains for friends present miles apart). The improvements in locations based services has complemented the precision of finding a bargain as well. In short, the mix of online social networking and location based services, a market is created which is largely local in scope but is linked to a national or even international network.

Deal marketplaces like LivingSocial and Groupon have benefited by managing the above mix perfectly.

Another important factor which helped deal sites, to continue standing, after the initial success, is the growing affluence in the developing markets; which provided deal sites one important thing at the right moment and continue providing that – Users. With a large number of people in developing countries, being introduced to fine dining, and fine living each day, deal sites can see such markets for growth.

No wonder, Google attempted to purchase Groupon near the end of 2010 for a reported $6 million, but the deal couldn’t materialize. But as deal sites were a hot commodity among private investors too, Groupon instead chose to go public, with an IPO in the second half of 2012.

As a prime player on web, Google can’t afford to remain absent at deals market, hence it chose to develop its own discount deal service, called Offers. The site got launched at the end of May this year.

What makes the acquisition important for Google is that, Offers only serves Portland, New York City, and the San Fransisco Bay Area; with Dealmap's resources (including over 450 deal sources) the search giant can expect to expand its reach. ---------

EA Acquires PopCap in a Billion Dollar Deal
Time killing games can be real money mincers for game makers of late; as mobile connectivity, tablets , smartphones, and a big rise of social networks mix has made time killing really effective. People can play games on their devices almost anywhere, just to pass time more effectively.

That’s why PopCap has been acquired by Electronic Arts, in a billion dollar deal. EA announced Tuesday that it will buy PopCap for $650 million plus stock and earn-outs, which altogether could add up to as much as $1.2 billion. The deal is expected to reach its desired end in August.

Firemint ,iOS game maker , in 2010

Intel's McAfee acquisition may delay
According to IDG news, European regulators are looking closely at Intel's planned McAfee acquisition and may hold up the deal with an investigation.

Why is EU concerned:

The European Union is concerned about Intel's plans to embed security features directly into its microprocessors. Intel supplies the bulk of the world's PC chips, and the EU is concerned that if McAfee has "privileged access" to the security features it could put other security vendors at an unfair disadvantage.

Are Concerns Real:

So EU is concerned that this will raise the monopolistic situation, similar to what Microsoft’s Internet Explorer created, when Microsoft started bundled it in its Windows Operating System. As 9 out of ten machines in this world run Windows OS, a free Internet browser, ended the quest of another brower for 9 out of ten people. ---------
