According to TechCrunch, Google apparently launched and then retracted a Google Latitude iPhone app earlier this week. The said iOS client for the location-tracking service popped up in the Japanese App Store for less than a day before Google pulled it back down. The app has not surfaced in any other country's app store, since then.

Latitude has been available as a web app on the iPhone for some time, but fearing a rejection, the native app was never submitted to Apple.

Taking into consideration, an official Google Voice app for iPhone , already on App Store; and the popping up of Latitude, it can be believed that Latitude, that is already been approved now, will be available soon in the US app store and around the world. Which will be awelcome entrant, because of its multitasking abilities. ---------

The software, which is free to use, has been available for 5 years now and continues to grow its installed user-base and is constantly evolving. Today it announced the latest iteration of Google Maps, the Google Maps 5.0. ---------

Google has unveiled the latest version of its Google Maps, the Google Maps 5.0.

What is New:

1) The use of vector maps which will offer 3D views in over 100 cities worldwide.Ability to tilt, rotate and zoom and with claims that the maps work even faster than the 2D maps of previous offerings.

2) Provision of an offline mode that keeps a user’s most frequently visited areas available off-line. A user can also navigate while offline and the application will even update routes when a user takes a misdirection without the need for an internet connection.

3) Addressing the storage issue, the new maps are smaller now than before and will only keep your most visited areas (Rest in cloud?).

Compatibility: What features will be available on a mobile will depend on its features, but most recent android phones will hopefully be supporting the vector maps and the multi-touch interface. All mobile running on Android 1.6 or later will be compatible with Google Maps 5.0. Google Maps 5.0 will still run, but without the unsupported features.

Availability: Google Maps 5.0 will be available to download very soon. ---------

Google unveils the latest version of Google Maps: Google Maps 5.0

TomTom is launching a discounted roadside assistance service for owners of its portable navigation devices (PNDs) and free customization(available to consumers who buy any of five PNDs through TomTom's website) of select new PNDs with custom graphics, artwork or photos.

Available to U.S. and Canadian owners, the Roadside Assistance service will be available at discounted prices to owners of any TomTom PND or TomTom iPhone app.

The service covers towing, flat tire repair, jump starts, vehicle lockout service, fuel delivery and the like. It's available through Cross Country Automotive Services.

Consumers will get a choice between an annual membership fee or per-incident fee.

The customizable PNDs are the EASE (black or white), XL 350 TM, XL 340 S, XXL 550 TM and XL 540 S. ---------
